The contents of the deal are not yet public.

It needs to pass both the UK Parliament and a vote in the EU.

there are a lot of reasons why this wont necessarily go like Mays deal

alot of hardliners will now be thinking its either this deal or a referendum which is not appealing

and we need to hear from head of DUP before we know if they actually will back it or not

Sure, but it needs more than just the support of the hardliners. Are the non-hardliners going to prefer this deal over a referendum? Given that we haven't seen the deal, we can't really say.

Parliament voted today to essentially force PM to request a delay to Brexit until legislation is passed

BJ sent the request to the EU in order to comply with law but immediately followed it with another letter basically saying ignore plz

To be fair, opposition parties have been intentionally sending conflicting signals for months now. First they demanded an election because they said Johnson wasn't elected, and then when he offered one they said oh wait nevermind. Then they demanded that he make a deal or request an extension, and then when he actually cuts another deal with the EU they turn around and say oh wait nevermind we're not going to vote on it until you request an extension anyway.

And the kicker is that everybody knows they're going to vote against it anyway. It's painfully obvious that their goal is to drag this whole process out even longer until somebody finally cracks and said screw it never mind.

The UK and the EU were able to come to an agreement on a new deal. However, it's not significantly different than the one that was rejected three times in the UK Parliament. Currently, Parliament is refusing to vote on it, and instead pushed a motion that requires Johnson to request and receive an extension before they will even consider voting on the new plan. This is separate from legislation they passed about a month ago that legally requires him to request an extension anyway if he can't get a deal by October 31st, and includes the exact wording of the letter to be written. Essentially, they are trying through legislation to force the situation where brexit is extended no matter what into next year.

The problem is that if members of parliament know that brexit has been extended, there's no reason to vote yes on this compromise deal. Which means that the new deal cut with the EU will almost assuredly be rejected, putting the UK back into the situation they've been in over the last few years, which is with no agreed-upon plan and time running out.

A proposal has been made and the EU has accepted it. It is now up to UK Parliament to accept or reject the deal.

Neither? Boris Johnson doesnt have the authority to make a deal without Parliaments approval, and the Letwin amendment they just passed is confusing and may or may not block them from voting on BoJos deal(subject to Speaker Bercows ruling, it seems).
Worth remembering the opposition passed on toppling the Tories because the Lib Dems wouldnt agree to Corbyn becoming Prime Minister even if just to enact a pre-agreed script.

Honestly I can't see Brexit actually happening unless the UK actually splits first.

The odds of them coming up with a deal that satisfies Great Britain, satisfies Northern Island, satisfies the EU and is compatible with the UK's existing laws seems absurdly low. They can't even get party unity on passing the damn thing.

edit: sorry misread your post. You're right it is there to avoid a deal passing today and then the government intentionally or unintentionally failing to pass it into law next week and us heading for No Deal. Considering how little Boris can be trusted it's not the stupidest idea to want to put that sort of protection in place.

In case people didn't know there are two stages to accepting the deal...

1) It gets passed in the house of commons
2) It then gets enacted into law on another vote

The Letwin amendment was there to ensure that if the deal passed today to satisfy the Benn Act that the government couldn't then deliberately or not deliberately fail to have is pass next week into law and us having no deal on the 31st. Leaving on the 31st is the default position at the moment until the EU decide to extend, assuming they will.

If we're assuming everyone is acting in good faith then there was literally no reason I can think of for The Tories not to hold the vote on the deal today. If they really wanted to go ahead with the deal they could have had the vote today and then enact it into law next week but they decided not to.

The only reasons I can think for not holding the vote is:

1) They want to continue the blame game and use this as an excuse for the deal not passing.

2) They never had any intention of getting the deal into law and Letwin amendment called their bluff.

Happy to hear other interpretations.

That's not true. Boris decided to pull the vote today after the Letwin amendment passed. There was nothing forcing him to pull it. See my above post for my musings on the whole thing.
