The movie takes place in the 70s and Joker is middle aged. I can see Ben Affleck being a kid in the 70s, but Joker would be like 80 in our timeline. Is the DC universe gonna come up with some excuse for why Joker doesn't age? Or is this not the real Joker?

It's a standalone movie that isn't tied to the DCEU

How old is he supposed to be?

Assuming Bruce is at least ten, he could be almost anywhere in is 30s-40s and still have a believable criminal career a decade later. Especially since hes become a cult of personality for a lot of the criminals and has followers

Not really spoilers since it's only a theory, but... One theory is that it's all a flashback, and he only looks in his 40s because he's projecting his current age into what he's remembering. One small element of the movie is that the Joker is an unreliable narrator, either because of his sense of humor or because of his mental illness(es).

But more than anything, it's just a standalone film. There's no plans to cross him over with Batman.

Clowns become his ultimate fear and he becomes clown man. Bruce Wayne becomes the real Joker. That's the joke that the psychiatrist doesn't get at the end

The Killing Joke was a standalone comic too.

Movies have never really locked themselves into having the one consistent Joker. They've all been dramatically different. They would have intended Leto to be their cinematic universe Joker and Affleck to be their cinematic universe Batman but that didn't work out.

It is likely whatever Joker they use for The Batman line up of movies will be different again.

If Phoenix is up for it I could see them re-using him but I doubt they'd worry about it not being consistent with his origin movie. They're not planning for Joker to tie into anything currently. I doubt they'll use Joker in The Batman which is still over a year and a half away so you're looking at like 2023 until we get a new canon Joker IMO.
