Hated the leveling system. It ruined it for me in the long run. I just couldn't accept that style of leveling back then. I wanted more control without trying to play a super specific way.

Oblivion won't do it for me as an ES game anymore, but there's good novelty in exploiting mechanical knowledge, or going back for a romp.

My only character, which clocked like 600+ hours, is a sneaky Bosmer vampire with a full chameleon set and insidiously high acrobatics and athletics. Barely ever needed to touch the ground.

lol no.

Oblivion actually introduced all the worthwhile AI changes to the series. Skyrim didn't really do anything new in this regard, and got rid of stuff like spell creation in favor of boring ass MMO crafting mechanics.

Despite the graphics and leveling system, Oblivion is better than Skyrim in so many ways.

On it my dude. Though I think I messed up making my imperial a thief. Also since I'm playing on PS3 I seem to run into the problem of not being able to left strafe. I've tried googling fixes but can't find anything.

The quests are definitely better in oblivion.

Compare to the mage guild quest from Oblivion to the tower of winterhold questline in Skyrim. It's not even a contest.

Morrowind was like that as well, and Daggerfall had a Jumping skill specifically though I don't know how the leveling system worked in that game to compare.

They're pretty evenly matched in what they bring to the table. Oblivion brings better guild quests, more expansive cities / larger pool of NPCs, and far better DLC. Skyrim brings better combat, dungeons, and world diversity, as well as smaller things like better integration of daedric quests into the world. And while I do miss genuine character attributes, it's hard to get over how counter-intuitive Oblivion's leveling can be (Morrowind had this problem too, but it at least had the good sense to not put a cap on paid training).

I haven't actually played Oblivion since Skyrim came out, though at that point I'd already logged thousands of hours on the game and had more than gotten my fill of it. And I would have put Skyrim down for good a few years ago if mods hadn't been made available on the XB1.

I think the reason Oblivion does it so well is you're not that special.
Outside of becoming "the person that leads the mages guild", you're nobody. Nobody sees you as "THANK YOU HERO! PLEASE HELP RESCUSE MY FRIEND NOBLE HERO!!!"

Skyrim had the towns and quests built around you. Oblivion had you wandering around to find quests and things to do.

My point is that yes you are a hero but the world isn't built for you to walk in and say "HELLO I AM HERE!!!!".
Things happen. Fucking waifu Mazoga can die if you get to high in level cutting you off from her quest.
Skyrim was more like a switch with "you are safe, all quests are here pick!"

I agree that the guilds in Oblivion were much better. From an actual gameplay standpoint Skyrim feels better when you play it.

Most everything is better though from the combat to the menus. Even though magic casting feels better in Skyrim, I thought magic in general was handled better in Oblivion.

I guess my point is that every time I try to play Oblivion I wish I were playing Skyrim.

The way I look at it is that the next TES game should have the spell variety and freedom of Morrowind with the faction quest detail of Oblivion and the physical worldspace detail of Skyrim.

Oblivion's leveling system is stupid, but easily fixed with an 'always +5 at level up' mod. The spellcrafting is nice, but getting access to it without the mage tower home(which is admittedly bundled into most GotY purchases these days) was a pain since you need to do favors for every last Mage Guild location in Cyrodiil to gain access to the Imperial College.

The other thing to watch for is the random mayhem that occurs. It's quite possible to come across dead NPCs in the grass, since a lot of them have 'once per month' trips from one city to another. It's also possible for NPCs to become mad at one another and go nuts. Sometimes this makes sense, as with an Argonian who steals food to survive and gets chased around afterward, but other times characters just go full murder-hobo. For example, the bodyguards for Counts or Countesses will slaughter anything and everything that isn't the player when escorting their charge from one city to another, to include Imperial Foresters.

Heh, yeah, the Imperial Sewers made vampires out of many player. I'm not sure if that was the cause for you, but they're the right length that people end up gaining a level down there and the before the exit is just too inviting...

Get used to draining bums of blood, as that removes the sun damage for a time. If you eventually gain access to custom enchantments you can make a permanent Restore 2pts Health as a sort of Daywalker Amulet.
