I think I've figured out why I don't play / buy video games anymore.

I think it comes down to the fact that I can't judge what a good or bad game is anymore. There are games that people say are good, but I've tried that are bad, and games that people say are bad that I've tried and are good. Recently, I've come to the conclusion that anything that is widely advertised (the word is shilled, because game companies don't do traditional advertisement anymore) is going to have some gotcha to it. The considering that mobile games as a genere are popular, mean that the vast majority of games I hear about are just not interesting to me.

This has ultimately lead me to quitting gaming, then recently trying to play Path of Exile for a bit, and then leading into me downloading Battletech, hoping that I enjoy it because I enjoyed it 12 months ago. I probably won't enjoy it but idk wtf I want to play anymore, because everything seems like hot trash.

Like I'm thinking of getting Pokemon Sw/Sh (the double pack + switch lite) but GameFreak has been totally not trustworthy for the past 5 years. I did not play SM/USUM because, 1 hacking ruined the community, and, 2 the 3DS was an awful platform & literally threw away my 2DS after ORAS - I thought going PC full time was going to solve my problems - it in fact made them worse.

I don't even know what I want anymore. I have Tales of Vesperia sitting in steam, only played for a few hours. That game was boring af, yet I heavily enjoyed playing DQXI last year. All multiplayer games are now garbage polluted with influencer (read: shill) marketing, psychological manipulation and operant conditioning mechanics and that ruined a significant part of my childhood gaming experience (multiplayer gaming in MMOs).

And now I am bored on a Saturday afternoon, and posting on PotD because I no longer post on Reddit, and there are no more video game communities online. It's sad. That's a totally different rant honestly, I don't understand how the massively fractured communities of the early and mid 2000s turned into like reddit and discord but it's pretty damn sad. That's another discussion for another day tho because I think I'm reaching my character limit.

P.S. Operant conditioning is so addictive that once you are conditioned you physically cannot stop yourself from doing the conditioned task, and may not even notice that you're conditioned. The mix of coniditioned behavior and consumerism is mass manipulation of everyone for monetary gain by a select few people.

It sounds like you care too much what others think. Just play what you want to play. Or don't. Whatever, ok?

I've been involved in gaming since the mechanical scrolling arcade racing racing games of the 1950s, built my first electronic game to move dots of light around an oscilloscope screen in 1961, and have enjoyed the ever increasing sophistication of games to the present. Now vastly enjoying driving digital versions of my real-life cars around the British countryside in Forza Horizon 4, playing daily since the game came out.

With the vast array of possibilities, saying you can't find a game worth playing seems a lot like saying you can't find a book to read, a movie to watch, or food to eat.

OTOH, I most enjoy games related my real-world intersts and activities: sports cars, aviation, golf, swordsmanship.

I read that entire post, and all I really got out of it is that I now honestly think less of you as a person.

For real. Theyre just video games, brother. No need to take them so seriously.

You don't need to mention this every time you bring up that you like video games

I get your feel. I struggle with knowing what Ill like and often gambling and losing. The best approach is to keep to familiar franchises or developers you consistently like and let everything else go until its $10 and then youre not really risking much. I maybe play 2 or 3 games in a year that I think whoa! Great investment about.
