You know how sometimes there is a common misconception about something like
-the way a word is spelled
-the lyrics to a song/quote from a movie
-when a person did something
-other banal things

Some people are convinced that these misconceptions (which are always very minor, easy-to-forget details) are not the result of their faulty memories, but rather the literal result of parallel universes fusing together.

They share their ideas online and talk about how "in my universe it was spelled like this but now everybody spells it like *this*"

Jesus christ, people. This is kind of mean of me to say but you're not from a parallel universe where a restaurant was spelled slightly differently. You're just easily confused, and gullible

No, even the origin of the name points to how stupid the "phenomenon" is.

A whole room of people were convinced that Nelson Mandela died in captivity instead of becoming the leader of South Africa. Despite the fact that he was a notable public figure well into the 2000's, appearing on the news and acting on behalf of his nation for decades.

A room full of ignorant people became convinced that they had lived in a world where Nelson Mandela actually died before achieving the pinnacle of his success, and instead of acknowledging it as a giant blind spot, they spun it off into this fantasy of having lived in an alternate dimension where they witnessed their version of reality.

Everything about that story is fucking stupid.

Yeah, it's just a silly little joke to me and a neat look at how large swathes of people can misremember something in a similar way.

Fun one: how do you complete the following lyric in the Drake and Josh theme song?

"It's gonna take some time to..."

I have had friendly arguments over this. Not "I come from a parallel universe and this is how it was there" arguments, but "No, it sounds like this" arguments.

We're not that unique as individuals and we're shaped by similar environments and have similar brain structures and so it's no surprise people would end up with similar false memories. It's like being surprised you meet someone else who likes the same obscure movie/game/whatever you do. You're just not that unique.

Instead of imagining what you said, I'll imagine what it must be like to think you're obligated to treat such unsubstantiated pseudoscientific mumbo jumbo like it has any believability.

Or to think that the universe is only weird and interesting if parallel universes are the real reason you can't remember how chick fil a is spelled. And to think that none of the stuff we've ACTUALLY verified could be interesting or strange.

Or to think that an idea is likelier to be true because in your opinion it's more interesting and fun than the alternative explanation

From that perspective I could agree.

For example I think it's pretty obvious why so many people think darth vader says "luke I am your father"

-The real line is obviously a reply denying a previous line: "no, I am your father"
-The line is iconic and therefore gets quoted a lot in pop culture, removed from context.
-It wouldn't make sense to say "no, I am your father" when quoting it out of context, so people quoted it as "luke I am your father" instead, and it stuck.

There are obvious explanations like this for some common misconceptions, and others are probably just because we tend to make similar mistakes and have similarly faulty memories. Many people misspell "tomorrow" as "tommorow" but there isn't necessarily a dramatic reason why

I'm down with people palling around and having a laugh - a meme's a meme. But to people who push the meme too far, who are in favor of the Mandela effect with "proof" whenever it pops up - that shit is stupid.

Quinton Reviews did a video about the Simpsons "predicting" the future, and how the Mandela effect and all that crap factored into it. He then made a follow-up video when either Funny Or Die or CollegeHumor released an April fools video depicting a bunch of popular Mandela Effect "theories" come true, which people took at face value.

The thing that gets me the most was that "The Simpsons predicted Donald Trump" with those side by side pictures of Simpsons Trump and IRL Trump. No-one stopped to say "oh wait, when did the Simpsons clip air again?" - which would have been helpful, since the Simpsons clip came out after all of the IRL stuff and was actively lampooning it. You know, the most reasonable outcome.

Folks can meme and joke, but there's a subset of maladjusts who push this shit hard, and dress it up in stupid terms like "predictive programming". People are serious about this alternate universe shit because they had a different idea about how to spell a children's multimedia franchise than the creators of that franchise. The legitimate lunacy that stems from this "concept" is dogshit.

The funny thing about the those who claim alternative universe are behind it is that the Mandela effect only happens with very small confusions. And only with items that the person is vaguely familiar with. Like how Froot loops or whatever is spelled.
There are no cases of mass numbers of surgeons who "could have swore the appendix was on the left side when they were in college" or "No, that used to be called something else, I swear!"

If the switching universes claim had any weight, it wouldn't only be the little things that we barely pay attention to that change. Important and consequential things would sometimes change too and the results would, at times, be catastrophic.

There is also the fact that we didnt always have YouTube, so a movie from 1980 wasnt always easy to reference. So a movie quote gets changed to add context, and people get more familiar with the pop culture references than line in the actual movie.

I've never heard it with "they". It doesn't even make sense in context with the movie, lol. Kevin Costner takes from the quote that he needs to build a baseball field so Shoeless Joe Jackson will come back.

Although, I did think this line was commonly misquoted for a different reason. I could have sworn the actual line was "build it and he will come" until I just now looked it up, lol.

It's always been between two of the spiral arms. Older reports say it was within the latter arm.

Newer information is more like the size of the Milky Way is actually 200k ly compared to the original 100k ly number.
