Pretty much.

Lets say some horses were born with a horn.

Now those horses had a predator that more often then not could outrun them. The horses with the horn are more likely to succesfully defend themselves when cornered and thus most of them survive to breed.

Eventually most horses in the area after many generations have horns.

I saw the neatest java applet, way back when people actually made applets, of psuedorandomly generated "creatures" that had only simple instructions to "eat" randomly generated dots of "food". They had no ability to detect food, died within 2? minutes of not eating, and reproduced at 4? minutes, and there was never enough food that all of them could possibly survive. Each time they reproduced, there was a random mutation put in that affected size, and limbs.

This is a topdown perspective of featureless 2d environment, for clarification. The creatures all had a single oblong body, and anywhere from 0-3 flagellum.

I ran it several times, and the end result was always sperm-shaped creatures dominating the void.

That shit adjusted my brain. I wish I could find it.

To be fair, geneticists do think we hit a sort of genetic bottleneck way in the past, where most of the human ancestor population died out, so we are probably from a whole bunch of incest, and are lucky that enough mutation was involved so that we didn't die from sheer inbred lack of fitness.

Holy fuck, how are people this stupid?

If you have an entire community of people who deliberately refuse to allow formal education on an issue, you create a unique ignorance echo chamber. One where their overly simplified (and often simply wrong) view of that issue is batted back and forth with juvenile "debates" and "gotcha" statements that literally make no sense to anyone but themselves. No one inside the community knows enough about the issue to point out the logical fallacies of their arguments, and they circle the wagons of extreme skepticism when experts in the field try to jump and and tell them why they're wrong.

The anti-vaxxers are the same way.

The tldr version: They know so little about something that they actually think they're experts.

To quote Dunning and Kruger:

People who lack the knowledge or wisdom to perform well are often unaware of this fact. We attribute this lack of awareness to a deficit in metacognitive skill. That is, the same incompetence that leads them to make wrong choices also deprives them of the savvy necessary to recognize competence, be it their own or anyone elses.

Also

People in the United States do not have a high level of understanding of evolution, and this survey did not measure actual competence. Ive found that the people most likely to declare that they have a thorough knowledge of evolution are the creationistsbut that a brief conversation is always sufficient to discover that all theyve really got is a confused welter of misinformation

it's simple math, really.

you have 2 parents.
you have 4 grandparents.
you have 8 great grandparents.

and so on.
if we count that far enough back, there's way more people in that line than amount of people that have ever lived, if you assume there's no crossover.
ergo, everyone has a bit of incest somewhere in their family tree. even if we ignore the bottoleneck events.

Incest is essentially not incest starting from 3rd cousin outward. It's mostly just an immediate / extended family thing. It doesn't matter if people are all technically related to a "genetic Eve" they've drifted so far apart by now they're completely different.

nah, europeans weren't/aren't particularly incestuous. incest is usually a class thing, where people want to marry within a class and it often turns out that the only other people worthy of marrying are related to you

This oxygen scenario, combined with the newfound ability to stick their heads out of the water, may have encouraged the evolution of lungs in fish.

See, this makes it sound like the creature is encouraging what mutation they experience next time.

Their ability to stick their head out of the water somehow made sure the mutation of lungs was bound to happen?
