What job would you want?

For me, it would either be a backhoe operator or what I am now, a network engineer for a telecom.

*by global income system, I mean a system in place where regardless of your profession, you are guaranteed a livable wage and comparable to the average income.

Yes, and that does not make it economically feasible to have a good quality of live on the income of many professions.

if everyone is on or about average wage, then wheres the incentive to do anything challenging or requiring more time or effort?

dont get me wrong, I enjoy what I do, but I wouldnt put in the effort and hours if it wasnt paying what it does.

It's called a calling or passion. You would be surprised at some of the things people are passionate about. Like one of my buddies dad "retired" and he now sells hotdogs at stadiums. Pay is crap but he says he loves it because "I get to watch the games and sell hotdogs to kids having the time of their life"

In all honestly I would rather be a backhoe operator than what I do now, but they make a fraction of what I do.

I know what a passion or a calling is - but again, where's the incentive to try harder or do better? I suspect what you intended for this thread to call out was a role which you'd be so passionate about you'd do it even if it paid shit, but I ended up reading this as the question of if all jobs in life earn (about the) same, what job would require the least amount of effort/hours/thought and give me sufficient bandwidth/capacity/free time to do whatever else I want outside of it.

Basically all grocery stores and most restaurants and stores would go out of business. Not many people would want to work at them, other than some of the cooks.

Not true. My grandmother was qualified to be a nurse but she loved working at truck stop dinners more. Tips were decent but she liked hearing the stories of the truckers.

He did say not many. But I think he's right. Some people may want to stay. But it might not be enough...

Then again, if it's easy work, some may take it because they just want something easy to do, so...

That's great that she loved doing that. Do you seriously think enough people have a passion for working retail to keep the current system? It would likely revert to days of yore, having little shops run by individuals or families.

What's wrong with that? Small mom and pop shops are great? I worked at a Gamestop outside of highschool and outside of Christmas season it was great. It's fun having regular customers that come in and talk about something you are passionate about. Now, I will admit, I would hate working in a bug box store. But something like a specialty store like a hobby shop, or the like would be fine by me too.

What's wrong with it is that there wouldn't be enough of them to support the population. If that system got implemented, it would likely usher in a new Dark Age. Manufacturing would pretty much shut down, too. If you were guaranteed the average wage doing WHATEVER YOU WANT, hardly anyone would want to work those jobs that weren't paying significantly more than what you're guaranteed to be paid by doing WHATEVER YOU WANT.

What do you think the world is going to go to in a few years? McDonalds, most stores, and other places show that they can use automated cashiers. Amazon has a store that shows you don't need people involved. Most factories do not need people as Lego once proclaimed they had factories manned by two people. Taxi drivers and over professional drivers are about to be without a job as soon as auto pilot becomes more feasible(they already had a truck deliver a load of beer),

So I am pretty sure in a few years, we will need something like global income because a LOT of jobs will be taken away with automation.

But at that point, we won't have jobs, anyway. We'll probably end up like the humans in Wall-E. Unless the robots decide that humans are a waste of space. But in the end, we've been talking about UBI in the other topic. We may get something like UBI, but it's not like we'll be able to do our dream profession because a robot will be doing all professions...

Let's say you've determined $50,000 to be the average wage to live comfortably on. How many other jobs are paying $25/hr? You'd then lose the vast majority of people making probably up to $30/hr voluntarily, since they wouldn't be taking that big of a pay cut, or would be getting a raise, to do whatever they want. Plus, I'm sure there would be guaranteed health insurance, too, which a LOT of those positions don't offer.

I think potato chip quality control would suffice as a decent job if everyone gets equal pay regardless of value delivered.. but Im pretty sure the economic theory behind what Op suggests has long been proven ineffective at economic development and growth.

If I could have any job I wanted? I like learning and educating people but the idea of just focusing on one thing doesn't appeal at all for me too specialize too much. Hmm, I don't know. Maybe become an advocate for preservation of historic or environmental sites by producing documentaries or something. That sounds fun. You'd get to travel all over the place and learn a lot.

I don't think he was saying that every job pays the same just that every job pays at least a salary that makes you comfortable or something. So basically OP was just saying if minimum wage was higher would you do a trash tier job or still bust your ass to make more money.

I would say that a single person working could support a four person household comfortably. Nothing fancy, but have enough for what ever normal comes up

Re-reading it again, you're right. Op is indicating it's more of a minimum wage at a much more comfortable level.

In which case who's going to pay for it? I feel many businesses would go bust very quickly as a result of this or just move offshore.
