That's a fiasco alright - weakest GOTY of the decade in strength, quality and general reception enabled pretty much because 2016 lacked big RPGs and Action Adventure games. To be really brutal about it it pretty much won through genre bias.

Anyway I do agree KH3 should have been in the PS4 poll specifically at the expense of CTR. It's a remaster, no need to have it. But I'm fine to drop a game that would probably come third (maybe even fourth behind Outer Worlds) for better games, yeah. There is merit in curating the options to cull lower quality games with more name recognition. I just don't think the CTR is the game to replace it and KH3 did still get good enough reviews so it had a fair reason to be there.

And on the subject of Death Stranding....How big of a Flop is that game?

When you consider how fucking strong an Exclusive Sony game was last year in God of War and here you have what is one of the more hyped up PS4 games, a Kojima game and one supposedly a ton of fanboys love and all the European gaming journalists are having a fit over

You'd think a game like that would do well on Gamefaqs but nope..noone gives a shit about it.

Yeah I did not love or even 'get' DT. It's just not enjoyable for me. I have played every single MGS game multiple times, I like Kojima's weird stuff sometimes but not DT.

Really I think it's time to retire system-specific polls and bring back the genre polls (though maybe tone the number of genres down a bit). System just does not matter anymore outside of Nintendo.

It will be funny if the GOTY poll is just Resident Evil 2, Fire Emblem, and Disco Elysium with no need to do a final poll though.

Shouldn't we have another poll afterwards where people can vote for which version of RE2 they played? Are you voting for RE2 as GOTY for PC, Xbone or PS4?

If this year's gonna be all about RE2, might as well have a bonus poll with only the original vs. the remake.

The only Metacritic score I see for Pokemon Masters and Mario Kart Tour are for the iOS version of the game. In fact, Pokemon Masters has a slightly higher Metacritic score than Mario Kart Tour and doesn't make it into this poll. Pokemon Masters has a 62 Metacritic score, compared to a 59 for Mario Kart Tour.

Looks like this year's Mobile poll will end up with better vote totals than last year's Mobile poll. Last year's poll had only 4007 votes with the top game being Dragalia Lost, with Fortnite and PUBG Mobile as the second and third place games. This year's poll doesn't look as strong on paper (due to 2 less games compared to last year), along with lacking Pokemon Masters, but it's still on track to beat out last year's poll in vote totals.

Last year's poll had 466 votes at the end of the first hour, while this year's poll has 534 votes by the same point in time. At the very least, we are expected to get at least 4500 votes and might even break 5000 as well.

Mario Kart is a significantly bigger name than Dragalia Lost. Perhaps the difference is being made up voters having a familiar name to vote for.

It was also the first actually good year for mobile games since like 2014 as well, helped largely by Apple Arcade. Sayonara Wild Hearts and What the Golf are both legit.

Which makes it even more of a bummer that Mario Kart Tour, widely considered to be a bad game, is beating both of them on brand strength. It's going to make the final poll potentially having four games in it even more bizarre.

Uhh Villians contest in 2005 was announced in April or something early. Almost all contests are like July - September for announcements

Disco Elysium doing only slightly better in today's poll compared to the PC poll could be explained by Disco Elysium being a PC exclusive for now. The game is scheduled to come out on PS4 and Xbox One sometime this year, but it remains PC exclusive at the time of the GotY polls. That really hurts it in a poll where most of the games are multiplatform.

Absolutely. If you were to take this result at face value versus the PC poll, you would think Goose Game would be a legit GotY contender. However, I'm of the opinion that it's mainly doing this well because it's what so many here automatically think of when they think of '2019 indie game'. That's not to say that it will get blown out come the final poll - this is too impressive a result - but I also wouldn't expect it to contend with RE2.

Also, on the subject of Indie poll strength changes Outer Wilds did much better on Disco Elysium than in the PC poll too. I can't help but wonder if in addition to Untitled Goose Game and Outer Wilds getting stronger, Disco Elysium got weaker because people don't think of Disco Elysium as an indie game. It is a shame because Disco Elysium seems like a much more logical third place than Untitled Goose Game... Though the actual third would be Sekiro.

I think what's hurting modern game strength is also the rise of indie games during the 2010s. This means you have more games competing for our time spent playing games. As a result, the biggest games struggle to get high playrates (for a modern game, anything above 50% playrate is considered high) and you need high playrate to make up for the lack of nostalgia on any modern game.
