Netflix ia gonna be out of the question in 2-3 years. Blew their load way too quickly and the content they produce is not substantial. Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu will wipe the floor with Netflix. I mean, they are even losing The Office and Friends.

according to the 4th post down it seems misleading. they are only doing that for reality shows and not their original content. but even if they are, it's actually quite a smart move. it gets people talking on a week to week basis. what's gonna happen on next's weeks episode, etc. and it gives them more time to produce other stuff while people are busy gossiping about the last episode.

Good. Hopefully they also start simulcasting the anime they license in the future. The fact that they lock a series away for months and not show it as it airs in Japan is stupid, and all it does is make fans look for fansubs and pirate the series instead of waiting for Netflix to upload the series.

Here's a perfect way to describe Netflix, conveniently taken from a Netflix-licensed anime:

Stranger Things would have been so much more enjoyable as an 8-week long event. The fan theories alone would have been worth it.

Anyways, they should at least do this for their licensed shows. I hate waiting a whole year for Kims Convenience. Gimme the new episodes as they come out in Canada >_>

Makes sense from a business standpoint.

It really does. The problem with people binging is that it kills online discussion and marketing. People blow through a season in two days, they talk about it for that week, and then it's on to something new. Compare that to something like The Walking Dead where AMC gets viewers year round from one season. AMC gets a hell of a lot more bang for their buck with that show than Netflix does with something like Daredevil.

Whats more is that not much would change in terms of actual release schedule. Its not like waiting for the whole show to be completed to be released at once is going to get it to bingers any faster. >_>

I have a question for binge-watchers here: how does the episodes being released weekly negatively affect you at all?

If the two options are "release an episode a week from July through early October" and "put up all of the episodes in early October after the show finishes", then no matter which one happens, you end up binge-watching the show in October. Holding the episodes back completely screws over the people who don't want to wait and binge watch while essentially having no benefits for the binge watchers. It's pointless, and it's only harming the show's appeal by limiting the ability for people to watch the show the way they want to watch it.

Most shows finish all production long before the first ep of a season airs so that's kinda nonsense. The real comparison would be watch a show that airs in July weekly until it's done in October or finish the show in July lol

Either way it doesn't negatively effect me. I just enjoy bingeing shows. Like right now I have to wait weekly for the Righteous Gemstones and no one is talking about the show. I would have much rather binged it in a weekend or two and enjoyed it on my own pace.

For Netflix originals, yes. But that's NOT how Netflix does it with shows they license from elsewhere.

For example, last week Netflix uploaded the first 12 (of 24) episodes of the anime Carole & Tuesday. The thing is, the show has been broadcasting weekly in Japan since early April. The actual TV broadcast had shown 19 episodes before Netflix would even give the rest of the world one episode.

Unless the show you're watching is a Netflix original that's made by Netflix themselves, chances are it's a series that has already been broadcasting weekly on TV somewhere else in the world, so Netflix could be showing it weekly if they wanted to. But they don't do that, because their philosophy for years has been "fuck anyone who doesn't binge-watch" and I really hope that changes in the future.

I dont think that's what they're changing though. Also, wouldnt that all depend on their licensing? I'm sure if they had the right licensing they would simulcast anime. They do it with Korean dramas iirc. Also I think I have seen some anime on Netflix that were simulcast. I dont think it has anything to do with bingeing.

Yeah, I very rarely binge watch anything, unless a show's episodes constantly end on cliff hangers or I'm trying to get caught up on a show. I prefer weekly myself (thanks Hulu!).

I don't watch reality shows but I do watch American Ninja Warrior (I'm aware it's on NBC), Ultimate Beastmaster (really hope it's not canceled, though last season kinda sucked), and Hyperdrive.

I've only heard of the Japanese Netflix simulcasting anime, such as they did with Violet Evergarden last year. But for everywhere else in the world, Netflix held it back until it was finished and then uploaded the whole series at once, so anyone else who wanted to watch the show as it aired had to pirate it with fansubs. Also, Netflix is literally the only streaming site that does this when they license airing anime (Crunchyroll, Funimation, Hulu, and even Amazon Video all upload episodes weekly) so I severely doubt that the reason they do it has anything to do with the licensing agreement itself.

True. I imagine that they are probably best to negotiate anime licensing before they air, this way the agreement can be obtained for less compared to waiting right till they're airing. Successful shows will go way up in price once they're proven to be great, probably further still if a show completes and wins some awards. If they negotiate earlier, some shows may be bad but they can probably get the good ones for less. Typical anime viewers will be in the know if a show is good or not, most of us will use stuff like MAL to keep up with what's getting made. I would suggest an opt out clause if a show gets extremely low views.

I tend to binge but one issue still is I won't know if they are going to get a show or not, I could wait only for them to never add it. It may only go on Japanese Netflix but not in the US. I think this forms a disadvantage compared to others like Crunchyroll. Violet Evergarden is a pretty good anime, could have been a positive for me on Netflix but I didn't know if it would come so I already watched it.

If they did, I would have less reason to watch Netflix than I do now. The crappy trailers and autostart are literally the worst shit Netflix has pulled out of their ass. At least we can (mostly) turn off their crappy post autoplay. However, ads would be even worse than that.
