The most your choices ever mattered in Telltale was early TWD S1, and even that was limited.

Well maybe some of the older stuff, but afaik TWD was when they started pushing that tag line.

yeah, you gotta go into telltale games knowing that you're more choosing *how* you get to your destination, not necessarily dramatically changing what that destination is

they have to loop everything back to manageable development scope somehow

Please give me examples of games that choices do matter, thanks

Anyway
Top Tier - TWD S1, Tales from the Borderlands
High Tier - TWD S4
Mid Tier - TWD S2, The Wolf Among Us
Meh Tier - TWD S3, Michonne
A pile of dogshit tier - Game of Thrones

Also, you do not do a series marathon and decide to ignore some of them. I mean, it's your choice, but it's still dumb
Yes, you need to play Jurassic Park too, enjoy

The game sells itself, or at least heavily implies, that choices matter. And they don't. Which is annoying. If a game doesn't give that illusion at all there's no issue, but it's disappointing when you think they will because they really should and they don't.

I may be crazy, and I know that I have brought this up before here or on Discord, but I swear that in The Walking Dead S1, Telltale used to have a message before each episode explicitly or heavily implying that our choices would have a profound impact on the story. After that turned out to not be the case and Telltale received criticism for it, it was patched to contain a more accurate message and future games used it.

Undertale is split into 2 parts. Everything else are minor things that matter, like Telltale games
Mass Effect is the same thing, your choices matter for little things as well

Yeah Telltale games are fun rides when the story is good and you accept choice is meaningless. But then you get something like Guardians of the Galaxy where not only is choice meaningless but everything feels pointless from characterization to puzzles to set pieces.

Undertale has a lot of little things that affect how the world reacts to you in a non-Genocide route, with characters' opinions of you and their eventual fate changing based on who you kill. And the Genocide route itself is so wildly different in tone and story that it's maybe the best usage of choice in gaming ever, especially with how often it hammers into you that you can stop being a monster at any time if you chose to.

Mass Effect choices mostly affect little things, but 3 actually has quite a few things that decide the fates of major characters and entire races, with many of your options being limited based on what you did in previous games. If the ending hadn't been so bad then it would be heralded as one of the best examples of a 'decisions matter' game.

Most Telltale games don't even throw you a bone. Everyone you save will end up dead in 2 seconds anyway, and every situation plays out exactly the same no matter how you approach them.

Choices mattered in Mass Effect but a lot of the time it was whether you "chose" to complete optional content that affected whether or not stuff happened. And that heavily affected the EMS score in 3. If you ended up with a high EMS score in ME3 and good endings to the various subplots (Rannoch, Tuchanka, etc) then that usually meant you were thorough more than it means you made "good" choices when presented with two options. For example, on Rannoch, a non-thorough player would have to choose between the Geth and the Quarians. A thorough player who did Tali and Legion's loyalty missions, did enough side missions/tasks etc in the game to get a high reputation bar, and did the relevant side missions in ME3, gets the third option to make peace, which is indisputably the best option to the point it's not even so much an option as "the way you should go". And those are all down to the choice to play and be thorough, not a difficult choice between two options.

So choices matter in ME in a huge way - but not the choices people sometimes think, is the point I'm trying to make I guess.
