It continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. Headaches. Keeps on giving me fucking headaches. Because holy fucking shit are the people around here stupid and racist as fuck.

Just had yet another customer stop in and start asking about it. Went something like this:

Him: So did they catch the guys?
Me: No, I don't believe so.
Him: Blacks.
Me: What?
Him: It's the blacks.
Me: .....ok, I don't really know what race they were. They were covered from head to toe. I only caught a glimpse of one of them...
Him: I'm sure they were blacks.
Me: ...is there anything else you need?
Him: They'll get them sooner or later.
Me: I don't know that they will. They don't really have anything to go on...
Him: DNA.
Me: What?
Him: They'll use DNA.
Me: What DNA?
Him: The FBI will find them. They won't let those black guys get away.
Me: Ok listen, the FBI don't have anything to do with this. There was no DNA evidence found. The cameras didn't get a good look at any of them because they were all covered. Both of the cars they used were stolen and were dead ends. Now if you don't need anything other than the gas, you can have a nice day.

I just turned and walked away from him to go make some more coffee. He mumbled something as he headed out the door, but I couldn't hear it (it was probably racist anyway).

I hate that people like him are regulars here. He's always been a particularly rude asshole, but this was a bit much even for him and I kinda lost my cool a little bit at the end.

For the record, my first interaction with this guy a few weeks after I started here pretty much set the tone for every future encounter. He came inside and was pretty short with me asking for $20 on the pump and a receipt. I rang it up and said "have a nice day" to which he didn't respond and just walked out the door hurriedly like he didn't have time to waste on peons like me.

He goes to the pump, picks up the handle and tries to pump his gas, but it's not pumping. So he starts SCREAMING at me (still outside next to the pump, so I can't hear him until someone else opens the door to come inside. According to the 4 people at other pumps, he was using some pretty vile language. Eventually he comes back in, basically shoves a customer out of the way at the counter and yells something about how I must be too stupid to even do the simplest job right and I deserve to be fired. I tell him calmly that I have other customers, so he's going to have to wait until I check out the rest of the customers in line before I can come out and take a look.

After I finish the last 2 people in line, I walk outside and am immediately greeted with a "well it's about fucking time you dumbass!"

I walked up to his pump without saying a word, looked at it for 2 seconds, pressed the button for unleaded and walked back inside. The entire rest of the lot immediately started laughing their asses off at him, and he didn't show up again for another month. He's tried to be "polite" (but is still a condescending ass) to me since then. I consider it a win.

Stories like this make me feel less bothered when I come across a gas station attendant who is unbelievably sour for no particular reason.

Trust that there is always a reason. You were just lucky enough not to be there to see it.

I've been told that a lot.

I think it's one of the few positive things I can thank my depression for. Spent the first ~25 years of my life basically incapable of feeling, so I never really lashed out when someone taunted or harassed me. Now that I've got my depression under control, I've found that my restraint comes in handy in a lot of situations that could otherwise spiral out of control pretty quickly.

He probly wouldnt have said any of it if there were any black people within 20m.

God Im so glad I dont work anything customer service related anymore. The one dickhead has to be made up for by 10 regular people for me to not want to tell said dickhead to fuck off. Did that a couple of times and didnt really get in trouble but god does it just prolong the time spent dealing with unpleasant people if you legit lose your cool/start being an asshole back. >_>

Yeah, I just remind myself that there's generally no use trying to put them in their place. More often than not it just ends up reinforcing whatever asinine stance they had going in. Like they'll get defensive and then just start ignoring the things you're saying and grasping at any tiny shred that allows them to not have to reevaluate their worldview. Change is hard, and trying to force someone who's not receptive to changing is going to backfire every time.

It's not that they're a "lost cause" or anything like that. In the right environment and the right mindset, anybody can learn and grow. It's just that a conversation with a gas station attendant is not the place to start the intervention. :-/
