This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Squirtle - high Midcarder

When the dust settled after CBx, Mewtwo, red, and charizard all looked like around the same strength, in this tier. Under normal circumstances at this point I dont think squirtle is going to be much better.

Venom - Mid Fodder. Recognizable enough to beat the weaklings; otherwise, GameFAQs just isn't the place.

Squirtle - High Midcarder. We're never going to see him slay Cloud again, and Gen I nostalgia doesn't have quite the sway it used to. Nonetheless, I expect Squirtle to still hold water, especially when wielding a Sugimori or sprite match pic.

Klonoa - Low Fodder. I do think he's right on the cusp of Mid Fodder, because Klonoa fans are definitely a passionate bunch. However, they're small in number, and the fact that he's never made a bracket is pretty telling. I imagine he'd be right around Shantae's level.

Only played the first game but yeah that was good stuff.

I think Klonoa is obscure enough that you can be generally well informed and still not have necessarily heard of the franchise though.

Venom - mid fodder.

Early 2000s venom might have been a decent Midcarder but hes way past his sell-by date, regardless of dubious recent movies.

This sounds about right.

I say just a midcarder for Squirtle. Pokemon had its worst contest since its return to dominance last year, and Squirtle was probably already weaker than Charizard.

Mid fodder for Venom, sure.

For Venom I will say High Fodder. His appearance in Spider-Man 3 was a joke and last year's Venom movie had mixed to bad reception. But he has a long history of game appearances from 90s beat em-ups to Marvel vs Capcom, and remains popular despite being long past his glory days in the comics.

Klonoa is Low Fodder, he's just too obscure to be better than that. There is definitely a small series fanbase that will come out to vote for him though, so he's not LAW fodder material.

I agree with High Midcarder for Squirtle.

Venom: Mid Fodder. Normally, I would actually say High Fodder, given his prominence as Spider-Man's #1 villain and because his movie was a wash at worst. However, I feel like a notable portion of GameFAQs is petty enough to antivote him on account of association with Sony, which such people blame for the implosion of Spider-Man in the MCU.

Squirtle: Agree with Midcarder. I think its nomination and general cultural shortfall compared to the likes of Charizard and Mewtwo means it's a tier weaker than them.

Considering there are only like 5 people who vote in this regularly, I don't see any reason to do this.
