Its a game that was already nearly 15 years old when the 20 year olds of today were being born.

I was born in the early-80s, and I sure as hell didnt beat many games from the mid-60s at any point in my life. It was pretty much from the NES and on for me, so I dont think its too hard to imagine that the more time passes, it lowers the percentage of people who have beaten it.

I will also say that 8.89% of the people who polled are plain liars since that's the current percentage that claims they beat both quests without any help of any kind. No fucking way.

Because Zelda 1 is shit and Zelda 2 is great.

Obvious troll attempt is obvious but Zelda 2 is quite good. One of the misconceptions of that era was that Zelda 2 was this black sheep game that no one likes. It was immensely popular and everyone I know had it and enjoyed it and it got good hype for the challenge. It's only people looking after-the-fact who bash it because it plays so different from other Zeldas.

Yeah there's no way to beat the 2nd quest without knowing what to do. Ive done it, and even using a guide it wasnt easy. Even finding the dungeons in the first place is hard. And getting through some places is so unlikely without a guide its not even worth mentioning.

I mean sure, i didn't need a guide for the whole thing. the first few dungeons were small enough that i could eventually work my way through. But good luck with the 9th dungeon without a guide.

Back in the day im sure some kids got only like a couple games a year. So they where forced to have patience and I honestly wouldnt be surprised if a dungeon took some kids a week to figure out.

Nowdays people have far less patience for shit like that between having more games and how easy it is just to look shit up.

I never played the first Zelda but attempted to play one of the later Zelda games in the series (I think it might've been Zelda 2 or 7 Swords). Without a game guide I was totally lost as to how to use the controls, gain items, etc. and kept dying before I made it through the first level. That's when I decided that Zelda wasn't the game for me.

Do you mean 4 Swords? Also, it was probably Zelda 2. From the way you described it, it sounds like that one... Which is awful, and probably not the best representation of Zelda...

I honestly didn't beat the original game until I was in my early 20s or so. I'd played it a bunch as a kid at my friend's house (parents never bought me an NES... but did get me a SNES, go figure), but not enough to master it. I just finally beat Zelda II last year, so I crossed that off my bucket list.

Probably because it's older than most gamers at this point and there are a lot of things they'd rather do instead than a play a game that aged painfully.

l think that it was 4 swords now that you mention it since I downloaded it on my 3DS from the Nintendo E-shop. I managed to get through the dive bombing birds only to reach a basement and couldn't figure out how to use any of the items I retrieved there (really frustrating). I seriously needed a game guide of some sort since, no matter which button I used, it didn't have the desired effect.

It also could be the type. When I was younger, I noticed the (usually older) top-down Zelda games seemed to have less direction. Which isnt bad. But can be a little harder for newer or younger players.

Honestly, unless you grew up with it, yeah I can't see someone enjoying it much with better Zelda titles out there. I'll defend a "A Link to the Past" though as a game that still holds up.

I played Zelda II countless times as a kid and literally could not beat the final boss.

20 years later I played it again at a friend's house and basically told him the entire time I wasn't going to be able to beat it, and then wound up beating it on my first try.

I have no idea what part of my gaming brain was so underdeveloped as a kid that somehow fixed itself by the time I became an adult, but it surprised the hell out of me. Especially since I assumed it would be even harder, because my adult reflexes are probably a bit slower than they used to be.

Luckily I had seen how to easily beat Shadow Link and managed to do it without getting touched (which was good, because the boss before had me down to a sliver of health)
