As someone who loves Balthier and Fran...I fully admit that FF12 is a...very BORING game. The color pallet is all pastels and browns, and the cast is extraordinarily flat. Vaan is an annoyance who is somehow the main character. Penelo is likable, but mostly ignored. Fran is a great straight man to Balthier, but I admit that she's the background character in that relationship. Ashe is "generic rebellious princess", Balthier is "generic lovable rogue" and Basch is "generic older guy party member". The supporting cast is completely forgettable as well, which a lot of the bad guys being generic armor-wearing peeps. It's just a very forgettable game overall.

I mean how are those comments any different from others? The newer games by default have more characterization and personality to their characters, in general terms at least. Yet the 2D games generally reign supreme even though they'd be more along the lines of generic tropes as characters.

I'm not gonna defend anything prior to FF6. I think FFI through FFV (save for some very good characters like Edge, Faris and Galuf) are generic as well. But FFVI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XIII...even if there are characters I outright loathe...at least I have cause to loathe them. FFXII almost doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game, because it's such a generic atmosphere. And keep in mind, I still like the game almost entirely on the basis of its gameplay. But the story is just SO forgettable.

XII isn't as generic as you're making it out to be. It's done very badly this year but generally it always has a character or two in the top 30 or so. That's highly improbable this year obviously but still. People generally have liked XII's cast, at least outside of the lead.

I mean I literally don't remember what Vayne does. It's a bit further than underuse for me. I can't even say I dislike him.

At least Dr Cid, while also underused, has most of his screentime in about the same spot in the game so he can leave an impression.

I don't think FFXII's cast is generic as much as underused. Calling Ashe "generic rebellious princess" I don't really think does her justice. I think "generic rebellious princess" is more like Garnet. Ashe still carries herself like a Princess and is still into the politics sorta so I would say that alone makes her not generic.

Though I will say Balthier in any other FF game probably isn't nearly as popular.

This is fair - I like a lot of minor/underused characters (Rufus, Miluda, Black Mage No. 288)

But I personally don't think Vayne did enough to distinguish himself with the time he had. "Hey buckethead!" is more iconic than anything Vayne said or did.

I mean to each his own, yeah. I like the freedom style trope as well as villains who don't really consider themselves as doing anything that's actually evil, in their minds.

I will say though, very disappointed with all those people who nominated Dr. Cid and then never voted for him. I felt like Genny or I had to carry him so many times, and this time I was on my commute home and couldn't reach it quick enough to safely vote. I don't get why people push characters back in and then hardly ever save them. Even though a lot of stuff I have nominated or pushed has fallen already, I have at least tried for those characters. Basch was literally a victim or that being the ONLY round that didn't have that extra hour. Every other one did, it was ridiculous.

yeah Martin pretty much traded for all of Dr. Cid's noms and then left him hanging because he couldn't choose between him and Zack. i did trade for one of his noms and would have gotten him if i hadn't been an entire hour late this round. oh well.

Yeah in my defence, I wasn't going to nominate anybody and only Doctor Cid seemed worth pushing to get in. So 7 of his noms came from me, and I did my part via a trade arrangement for Doctor saves for the rounds before this one. I'd frequently pick up the 2nd save for him too. Kind of got tired of carrying him.

To be fair, I saved Tifa at my H3 because of that lateness, didn't want to chance it since it was close for her the other day. Today's result also frees up my H3 (and what's left of H4) for that kind of flexibility I guess.

I'd say Vayne is probably the least memorable main villain post FF3. Everyone else at least has something that makes them memorable. Vayne has the problem of never being around in a game that doesn't have much story exposition to begin with.

Like Vayne you kinda think he's gonna do stuff and he doesn't but Bart/Dysley doesn't even do that... you just know that some pope monster exists and you fight him
