I mean, was he though, it's still a little girl with books. Sure she might be up to something, but again she may just be homeless and selling books she stole to make some money so she can have a hot meal, doesn't mean she deserves a round to the head.

You could make this sort of argument for all of them though, which is what he did. As someone else mentioned before, they deal with plenty of beastly looking aliens that are actually harmless, from that perspective he's kind of right. Why do any of those guys immediately deserve a shot to the head.

His reasoning about the physics books seemed far more about her age than her being a girl. And he's kinda right on that too. How often do you find an 8 year old seriously studying quantum physics books? Pretty much never.

The purpose of the exercise wasn't just to test their shooting skills, it was to test their ability to make a judgment call rather than just blindly shooting anything that isn't human. The whole series of tests was to weed out anybody too rigid in their ways and select only those that are flexible, yes even when they had to fill out the form.

I mean, his reasoning for not shooting one alien was that it was gripping a tissue and the other was that because he was hanging then it must mean that he was working out, while damning this girl to death on the assumption that the books that she was carrying were too complicated for her when she does nto necesarily carry them to read it herself.

It sounds like a big fucking joke, the test guy does not look impressed at all and shakes his head, tells so to the other main guy from the movie but he still convinces him cause reasons and they let him in DESPITE what happened in the scene, I've watched sceenes like you describe but the mood and reactions of the people involve are somwhat positive to what happened, not negative.

The only thing Zed wasn't impressed by was J's bad attitude at the time, but Zed stopped the test because shooting Tiffany and nothing else was the correct answer, but the test also required an explanation as to why he made that choice (at least according to the source material which the movie was based off of).

Yeah... The whole point is all the other agents shot the aliens indiscriminately on sight. Will Smith was the only one that observed the scene and didn't just assume that aliens were bad, but instead looked for the real anomaly, which was the little girl walking through a ghetto with Quantum Phsyics books. The point isn't that he'd actually shoot her on sight, the point is she was the only thing that raised actual suspicion.

He comes up with all these "reasons" the scary aliens aren't really a threat because of minor details with no real proof... yet he couldn't think the little girl got lost trying to drop of her older siblings text books.

Really... the monster is doing pull ups on a light post is normal because what average person into fitness just randomly work out on street fixtures in every day life... The tissue looks more like a crumpled piece of paper and could have been a stolen document as easily as it could be a tissue.

What is really bad is that while he is explaining everything he is doesnt put his gun down and just waving it around carelessly.

If you really dissect the scene it doesn't make sense that the girl is any more a threat than any other thing in the gallery but it's a movie... and in the moment it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Say "yeah that's why he shot the girl." Even though if you put thought into it the scene is still stupid.

I just realized the eye exam was the memory flasher so they forget everything about the exam

I just realized when the UFO crashes at the farm and the farmer gets dragged into the crater and you briefely see that his skin is peeled off his body and then dragged back down, and then when the farmer comes back up looking and behaving very oddly and starts causing problems that attract the attention of the MIB, that the alien actually ends up wearing the farmers skin.

To be fair, these army type guys who probably run 10k every morning while wearing a weighted vest... would easily be able to chase down and outrun a sephy without breaking a sweat. Physical stamina and endurance is probably not the best test when you're just gonna be up against 8 tentacled giant aliens anyway.

The sephalapoid was able to safely jump off an overpass, leap up about thirty feet, and scale a sheer wall. I think it was less about speed and endurance and more about keeping track.

The first movie really is so good. I dunno how they kept making 3 more and each was more awful than the last.

Studio shit, mostly. It comes out through interviews with the director and the cast of the original 3 how nobody really felt invested in 2 or 3, and a lot of corporate meddling was taking place, so the products came out kinda hollow as a result.

The first one was a labor of love, the others are a labor of bottom lines.

I don't like how 2 pretty much ruins the ending of the first one with k's character, but rosario dawson is just really sweet.

I definitely agree about no one being invested in 3. It came out of nowhere with barely any advertisement (yet weirdly still made quite a bit at the box office) and while better than the previous one, still not great. The whole josh brolin emulating tommy lee jones had its moments though.

I feel like the test thing with Will just saying "fuck this" and pulling the table to help him was a really good showing in how they wanted him because he wasn't the norm and could think outside the box. I mean, the whole concept of having some kind of written exam where you need to fucking write on your lap or the side of an awkward egg shaped thing is absurd, Will showing he wasn't your typical militant drone grunt would be the type of person you'd want in a program like MiB.

Hence Zed's whole sarcastic line of "Gentlemen, congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of government training". They don't want someone like that, they wanted someone above that.
