This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if both members of said duo are named in the title of a game (Banjo-Kazooie, Sam & Max Hit the Road, etc).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Edelgard - this is completely dependent on when the next contest is. If it's within the next year, she could be as high as a low midcarder. She is by far the most popular character from a game that is still #1 on GameFAQs almost a month after its release, from a series that has a handful of middle-of-the-pack characters as it is. But the longer we wait, the less chance she has, especially if a new FE is out by then. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt though and say fodder line.

Missingno - high fodder. The joke "characters" are a thing of the past, but Missingno may be able to maintain a modicum of strength due to being from Pokemon.

Red - low fodder. Some of the licenced characters we are picking for this make me scratch my head.

Red - Low fodder for sure. Advertising makes him recognizable enough to not be LAW fodder.

Missingno - Fodder Line. If any joke character is going to do well, it's the Pokemon.

Edelgard - As of today? Midcarder. I'm with darkx. Ask me again in two months and I'd say Low Midcarder. Ask me again in a year and I'd say Fodder Line. Ask me again in two years and I'd say High Fodder, which is where she'd stay. It all depends on when we have another Character Battle. Make of this what you will.

i'll agree with darkx on eggogard as well, there's some massive hype surrounding the new FE, we gotta re-rate her in a year or two though

which brings up the question: how long until a character is eligible to be re-rated? like 95% of them don't need to be, unless we get the Batman: Arkham City of M&M's games sometime soon

I don't actually few MissingNo. as a "joke" in the same sense of most of the others. The thing might be a glitch but it was a legitimately important part of the RBY experience. It might not be one of the top RBY Pokemon in strength but it should still be fairly high up there.

Edelgard: I'm going to go radically against the grain here and say Mid Fodder. As I see it, the purpose of this series is to evaluate where each character would stand if a contest were to take place now, not wherever they'd be in a year or two, or whatever. We're talking about one of three main characters from a month-old game which probably no more than a third of this site has even played. As a non-fan, I can say that I didn't even know who she was back when darkx originally nominated her, and I still didn't know she was female until today. However, I'm of the contrary opinion that time will actually boost her strength up to a certain point, due to Three Houses' increased playrate.

Red: Couldn't be anything other than Low Fodder.

MissingNo.: Yes, it has legitimate non-joke appeal, but it has always functioned as a joke character first-and-foremost in these contests. Thus, it will suffer the same fall from grace as all joke characters, so High Fodder seems right.

First off, a 1/3 play rate for a game probably puts it in the 99th percentile of all games on this site (considering there are systems that don't even have that). And it's going on a month at the top of GameFAQs' games list, meaning for the past month, more people have visited this site for Three Houses than any other game, period. And I know games don't necessarily equal characters (GTA5 is currently #3 after six years and we still don't think Trevor would be worth much at all), but every fanbase is different, and the FE fanbase cares very much about its characters, and Edelgard in particular has developed a very devout following.

Red - Low Fodder since no one will care about an M&M. Though maybe Yellow could be mid.

Edelgard - Incredibly new characters are very tough to rank since they tend to range up and down. I will say Fodder Line for Edelgard at the moment since Three Houses seems to be pretty popular so far. She might go up depending on how the game is received in the coming months.

I will say Fodder Line for Missingno. Most of the joke appeal is gone, but Missingno can still do pretty well simply by virtue of being a Gen 1 "pokemon" and one of the most infamous glitches in gaming.

I'd say Three Houses' likely 1/4th to 1/3rd current playrate is more like the 95th percentile than the 99th percentile; regardless, Mid Fodder puts Edelgard roughly at the 95th percentile of all video game characters on this site, so it evens out. However, I will say that Mid vs. High Fodder was a tough decision for me, and that I'm probably underestimating Fire Emblem's fanbase due to not being part of it, so I'll change my vote to High Fodder.
