Houses are usually too spacious for only one person. People ask me to buy a house, but I'm single and plan to be single till the day I die, so the only person who would EVER live in the house is me, myself and I. Is there any point to actually buy a house....for one person?

A lot of times monthly payments for a house are less than monthly rent.

But that's three people.

I'm buying one alone right now. I pay too much to rent for landlords to collect money for properties that they don't want to take care of. I can at least maintain my own property and keep my dog as well.

Cheaper than renting and your money is going towards your own asset you could sell later in life if you need the money (for example to pay for a really nice care home in your final years) rather than just making someone else money.

Im alone in a 3 bedroom house. I go into the upstairs rooms like twice a month to grab something I want. My downstairs bedroom is just a bed wall to wall and a tv stand. It's pretty cool.

The problem is, I have to "upkeep" the house, and with renting a house now, I don't have to mow the lawn, etc.

Aside from the financial aspects

-a garage where you can store tools and work on your own cars
-a home gym in your basement
-a back yard where you can grill, grow a garden, raise chickens, etc.
-able to renovate/remodel your house as you see fit
-able to make noises, etc. that would disturb your neighbors in an apartment

- get away from noisy and loud neighbors
- could be about the same money as an apartment
- more space for my stuff
- no more fighting for parking
- better for pets
- can watch loud shit at night in home theater without worrying
- no need to worry when you order adult items online
- more space for cooking
- ability to get your own appliances
- more space for friends to hang out

You know that stereotype of men getting a "man cave" where all their stuff gets to be a single room?

Imagine having an entire house where you can dedicate entire rooms to whatever you want. If it makes financial sense, awesome. Especially with the added benefit of not having to worry about about making noise and noisy neighbors

I'd say it depends on your individual needs, desires, and ability to afford it. If rental properties in your area are just not worth wasting the money I'd go for it. If you're living alone and you'd be content with a small apartment in a decent area there isn't anything wrong with that.

Noisy neighbors is still a thing. People across the street always got douchebags sitting outside in car with their music up. I usually drown it out anyway. But once in awhile it comes through and feels so disrespectful

-Increases net worth (100% of rent payment reduces net worth. Principal payments on a mortgage does not reduce net worth. Also as the value of the home goes up, equity increases the same amount which in turn increases overall net worth)
-Have more stability than renting (Rent can easily go up as much as 10% for the next year, so unless you move out to a new apartment, you're stuck paying it. Fixed rate mortgages remain constant for the entire life of the loan even during periods of high inflation.)
-Have freedom to do whatever modifications one desires (Hate the appliances your rental has? Tough shit, you're stuck with them. Hate the wall colors? Better ask for permission from the landlord before painting, and it must be a licensed painter. Want a private pool? Nope, you're stuck with the community pool if the apartment complex or neighborhood even has one.)

i'm renting now but do plan to get a house in the next few years or so. but single now so kinda waiting till i settle down. i have to cut the grass here but any big problems they fix. but the amount of money i spend on rent could just be a mortgage payment. my place now isn't very big. 3 bedroom with the other 2 rooms just like storage rooms. if i get a house i'd want a big house that would be plenty for a family whether that happens or not for me.

I rented out the second floor of a dudes house where he lived by himself. I pretty much paid his taxes in rent. He ended up selling the house after I moved out though. Too much of a hassle for him.

I'm married now but was single when I bought my house some years ago. For me I think it had to do with a sense of safety and security and having a space that was completely mine. Apartments just feel so temporary and tend to house a lot of lower class type of people which always had me on edge. Plus, jumping in at the very bottom of the 2010 crash, my mortgage is actually cheaper than any monthly rent I've had
