Let's see...probably costs about 20 dollars a month to print thousands and thousands of those. Maybe. Spread that across about 15 drivers or so. Nice, and extra dollar and some change each month per driver.

It costs more for a store to sell deliveries than carryouts. Why? Because it requires much more labor. A store can sell 30 carryouts an hour and only need maybe 4 or 5 employees to make them and handle the transactions. If instead those 30 carryouts we were 30 deliveries an hour, the store would need about 12 - 15 employees to make the delivery. That's more than double the cost of labor the store has to spend just because people want delivery.

So there you go...never a reason to complain about a delivery charge again now that everyone knows why they are 100% perfectly reasonable.

30 deliveries in an hour x $5 charge = $150 revenue per hour

let's say they do hire extra 10 workers for that hour just for deliveries. How much do they pay tipped employees per hour? Multiply that by 10. It would need to be $15 per hour to balance out. As tipped employees, they make FAR less than that (minimum is $4.35). So it's about triple what they need to offset the costs.

Now, consider the fact that they also have profit margins on every single one of those 30 deliveries (some of which will have multiple items), and that those are potentially 30 orders they would not have made otherwise. How much do you think a pizza costs them to make compared to what they sell them for? Multiply that by 30, assuming they sold only 1 item per delivery (not the case). This makes them a lot of money.

They are just adding to the profits because they can. It's not to offset costs. Yes, it costs them $4.35 for a delivery driver for an hour. They take in (let's say) $4.35 delivery charge. That's ONE delivery. How many deliveries does that driver make in that hour? More than 1, and its profit. Now, consider that they are also making profit on every item sold.

I mean....it makes more sense to tip a delivery driver than a waiter. People will order food for delivery in rain or snow. It takes more time and effort to get food to someones place compared to walking a few feet to a table.

Where I live, delivery charge is $3.50 and drivers are paid $9 an hour. Then we factor in all the additional costs such as insurance, etc.

Oh yeah and also we factor in the fact that drivers actually do get like $1 off each delivery charge.

So if we revise the numbers, they are now slanted in favor of what I originally said.

The equipment, utilities, facilities and labor eat a lot of huge margins on the food itself.

Same. I used to be a driver for Dominos about a decade ago, made somewhere around $5.10/hr and everything was dependant on my tips to have either a good or bad day.

The nicer the house the worse the tip was. Theres also thr people who order delivery at 11:30pm and then dont tip you anything which is shitty. I looked forward to delivering to apartment complexes because they would tip the best.

I would hate to work in a job relying on tips. Imagine having a chance that you go home after a hard day of work spending more than you make on gas, or just breaking even. Even if the employer will compensate you to min wage if the tips dont make up for it.

I rarely tip delivery drivers, it's not a hard job really unless it's fucking cold and snowing out. Now waiters and waitresses? Yeah i usually do tip them 90% of the time.

Maybe not difficult. But it is a high risk job. A higher risk than you're willing to take by driving to the store to pick it up.

Risk/reward is something entirely forgotten by a lot of people it seems.

You go to strangers houses all night and risk being robbed or worse all night...the dudes deserve to go home at the end of the night with a wad of cash in their pocket.
