Many of you know I have shopped primarily at safeway for many years. I used to shop for 4 people, and I saved a ton by using weekly adds and just 4 you, and shopping based on what was on sale (along with stocking up during good sales etc).

I did not use the delivery option in the past because many of the deals where not available online, and I would usually save at least 50% at checkout (my record was 86% in Pleasanton when Albertsons and safeway were sperate and I shopped at both).

Anyway, there is a promo going on at safeway right now. If you order online for delivery you can use a code TWENTYOFF4 which gives you free delivery and $20 off your first 4 orders delivered ($80 total). In addition, ALL the weekly deals/coupons and just 4 u offers now work with the delivery orders.

I just bought 125$ worth of groceries for a bit under $50 and they will be delivered (for free) tomorrow between noon and 2pm.

I could have actually saved a bit more, as I didn't know that you only needed the $75 minimum to get the $20 off, at checkout (Before just 4 you discounts are counted).

With that knowledge, next time I could easily check out with 80$ instead of $125, and end up paying somewhere around $20 total lol with free delivery. You only get the deal 4 times, but there are other ways to get free delivery, and I think if you have a 4 hour window it's free or almost free anyway.

Anyway, just another one of my random heads ups lol:)

Got my final receipt. It was 67$ , but I'll get a 10$ refund as they didn't give me the primo taglio cheese for free (you get it if you buy 1 pound of primo taglio meat).

So that brings it down to 57:)

Total savings was 26$ from card $28 from just 4 you, 20$ from promo code (and free delivery), $10 for the free cheese = 74$

Course next time (next 3 times), I'm gonna seriously rock it.....I might be able to get up to 80% savings.

I usually shop based on getting at least 50% off the items I but, but since I just moved I needed to get basic things like water etc.

Next time I'll aim for stuff that is 50% off, especially if alot of that is from just 4 you. That lets me get 80% worth of stuff for $40 base, then $20 off from the promo code....so total of $20.

But that is just my base. Like the ham off the bone was 50% off, but the cheese was free, so if that deal is still going, I would again get $10 off (or $10 worth of cheese for free), meaning $10 total (out of $80 worth of groceries). Things like the BBQ sauce are normally $4 and only $1 right now as well.

Wonder if I can actually end up getting a credit lol if I worked hard enough at it. Maybe not (and they may balk at it) but I could possibly get the charge down to like $5 for $80 worth of groceries if I try hard enough hehe.

People keep saying this, because the other stores brain wash you by showing price comparisons etc.

I do, and have shopped at winco etc, and no, it's not even close, let alone better.

Now mind you, this last shopping trip was delivered and involved alot of stuff that I needed right away due to moving and STILL I got this for 57$

4 bottles of rague with meat pasta sauce
4 bottles of Prego garlic and onions pasta sauce
1 pound of ham off the bone
1 pound of munester cheese
8 galon bottles of crystal gyser spring water
4 100 lipton ice tea packages
2 bags of safeway select hot dog buns
2 packages of luceren swiss cheese (use them on the buns for yum grilled cheese)
1 package of argentine shrimp (2 pounds frozen) for $17 (before other deals)
4 bullseye bbq sauce
1 primo taglio grated parmesian cheese
2 coffee mate (regular flavor)

All that for less then $60.

That is 34 items for less then $60, including 2 pounds of Argentine shrimp (which are usually at least $12 a pound even at winco etc). The BBQ sauce was $1 each (it's double that at winco), the pasta sauces were about $1.50 each (at least $2 at winco etc) the luceren cheeses are $2 a package (won't get that cheaper anywhere) and these were all base prices without the just 4 you, or the $20 off the entire order being factored in.

Admittingly the waters were not a great deal at 90 cents each, I usually only buy them when they are under 80 cents (base), but...I just moved here and I didn't travel with large jugs of water, so I needed a good supply (I drink about 1 of em every 2 days).

And that wasn't even really going all out on saving, in fact it's probably the least I have saved in a long time.

My next order? Yeah, it'll put this one to shame. I will probably get something around 70$ worth of groceries at winco or walmart or other "cheaper stores", for less then $20....and get it delivered.

So yeah, no, you don't save more at those other stores, unless you totally ignore deals and just by a specific brand every time and even then you generally won't save too much if anything (Because the deals per week, from the circular etc, are automatic, you don't have to add it to your card etc.)

So basically you save more money at Safeway if you devote time to determine which are the best deals and buy those. Sure, if you have that level of effort on saving a few bucks it might be worth it to you it doesn't work that way for everyone especially being forced to buy certain brands/foods just to save a dollar or two.

Not even close, your saying that on average you could get all of the above at walmart for less then $1.50

There is almost nothing on that list you can get for $1.50 at walmart.

PregoWalmart # 9213131 $1.78$1.78$0.08 / oz *4 = $7.20
RagWalmart # 550913696 $2.72$2.72$0.07 / oz *4=$10.80
Argentine Red Raw Extra Large Wild Shrimp 16 oz. $8.34$8.34$0.53 / oz *2 (I got 2 pounds)=$16.68
Bull's-EyeWalmart # 9284677 $3.18$3.18$0.08 / oz *4=$12.78
COFFEE MATE THE ORIGINAL Liquid Coffee Creamer 32 fl. oz. Bottle $3.29 *2 = $6.58
Great Value Deli Style Sliced Swiss Cheese, 24 count, 16 oz $3.66$3.66$0.01 / oz *2= $7.32
Crystal GeyserWalmart # 550325154 $0.83$0.83WAS $0.98$0.98$0.01 / each*8 =$7.84
Lipton 100% Natural Tea Black Tea Bags, 100 ct$9.59$9.59-$19.19$19.19
It's 9.59 for a 3 pack and 3.48 for the 4th (cheapest way) = $13.07

So not including the 1 pound of ham and 1 pound of muenster or the hot dog buns that is a total for the exact same products (except the equivalent of luceren swiss cheese) of $82.27 cents.

Now mind you without sales that would be cheaper then safeway, even if you add $20 to that (for the pound of ham and cheese) and 2$ for the 2 packages of hot dog buns (non-sale prices). In that case walmart would cost you only 104.27 cents versus Safeway which would have costed $124.

Walmart is cheaper in such a case your right.

But with the sale, and not even shopping based on what was best on sale etc, I paid $57, which is $25 less then if I had bought the same stuff from walmart, and 47$ less if you include the ham/cheese etc. I also got it delivered to my door.

Also, with just 4 you, you just need to spend about 3-5 minutes skimming through and adding anything you might actually eat. It's all on one page you scroll down. All the sales from the store are automatically added, although I do read the circular each week (usually the night before). I spend less then 10 minutes total going through safeway.com each week, and if you get it delivered you spend WAY less time then driving to walmart or winco etc.

So yeah, sorry, safeway is WAY better, even if you don't shop by the sales. Shopping by the sales just lets you do broken stuff like buy 100$ worth of groceries for $20 etc. You still save way more then you would at winco or walmart, if you just actually spend a few minutes adding coupons etc. It's all digital, so doesn't slow you down in line etc even in a physical store.

I have mentioned it before, but to re-iterate, I buy based on what is on sale, and stock up a bit, but...this does not have a big effect on what I actually eat each week. For instance tomorrow boneless rib eyes are $8.99 a pound. I'm gonna go with them. This week it was T-bone steaks, week before tri-tip steaks. So yeah, I choose the TYPE of steak based on the sale, but I still have steak when I want it (although I'm trying not to eat steak right now).

Meanwhile I'll wait for bullseye bbq sauce to be on sale for $1 like now, I buy a decent amount, and then restock back up next time it's on sale. $1 is less then 1/3rd the normal price. I don't use a ton of BBQ sauce though, so 4 of them usually lasts me till the next sale.

Will I have argentine shrimp if they are not on sale? Sometimes, but rarely, I generally just look at the circular and just 4 you and choose from the foods I like, that are on sale. I don't by weird stuff I don't normally make, I don't even really change brands based on sales etc, I just choose the meals I make based on what is cheapest that week. It takes almost no time, and it can save you a ton of money.

Now with this delivery thing, it can save you a ton of time as well, as the worst part of shopping at safeways is more and more people are figuring this out, and the lines keep getting longer. Having it delievered avoids that all together, and at least for now you even save more money.

You can also btw, mark it to have no-substitutions. This could literally mean you shop and end up with a credit lol, because the just 4 you discounts could drop you under $20, and then you get the $20 bonus. I am not sure how that would work (would the universe implode...would they add money to your card instead of take it away?).

if you are going to spend that much effort on hunting sales then why not just buy from a cheaper place during sales?

It takes less then 5 minutes to go to safeway.com and click on just 4 U, then scroll down and add anything you want to buy, while also quickly reading through the weekly add.

In both cases the items you pick are added to your shopping list, so if you go into the store, you can easily and quickly go get what you need. If you buy online/delivered, you can still do it in about 10 minutes saving a ton of time actually going into the store.

No other stores have the sales like safeway, between the weekly add and the just 4 U, a few have started to do the cards with discounts, so you get the add prices they send out automatically (and the coupons etc), but none are as good yet.

Shop at Walmart/Winco etc, and you will save about 10-15% over safeway, if you avoid EVERY sale that safeway has somehow.

Randomly just buy stuff, and still have a safeway card and it'll be around the same price for stuff, just randomly.

Spend 5 minutes prepping, and you'll save a good 20% more then other stores pretty easy.

Actually shop based on what is on sale, buy one get one free etc? You can end up cutting out most of the cost for groceries. I would say on average I save somewhere in the 60% range when I shop, but there are extreme deals (20% off order of $100 or more, 10$ off order of 50$ or more etc, that stack with all your other bonuses, the $20 off order of $75 + free delivery that I'm using right now etc).

When you get the extreme deals, you basically get free food, or close enough not to matter.

Since the $20 off $75 happens before Just4U discounts, you can easily purchase 100$ + worth of groceries before the weekly sales, which can drop your total by 30% or so (so $110 becomes $75).

That 75 is enough to qualify for the deal, and after you do, THEN your just 4 U kicks in, dropping it another 30% (of base price, not the 75$). That drops your total another 35$ to $40 total.

At which point you get the Promo that drops it another $20........down to $20 total for $110 worth of groceries. If you get the cheese deal in that (like I did) that is another $10 though, so $10 for $110 worth of groceries.

Please tell me another store where you can purchase $110 worth of groceries for $10.

Should also mention you can use the safeway app to add deals etc WHILE IN THE STORE, so you don't waste any time at all. I do that often if I missed something, or I didn't plan on shopping but stopped on the way home etc.

It is easier to do it from the computer (faster), since you can see a whole screen of deals at once, and you have to scroll through like 6 of them at a time on the app. That being said, safeway usually puts a sticker on anything with a just 4 U deal (at least the bigger ones), and you can just look it up and add it.

I have missed things a few times and this let me add it while in the store. You can also take a pic with your phone and they will add it at the front when you check out.

Long story short, if you care about money and spend even a decent amount on groceries, shopping at safeway can save you a significant amount, and more importantly, let you purchase much more expensive and yummy foods for less then you would normally spend on cheaper stuff.

Mostly matters if your shopping for multiple people, but, I still save a good $100-$200 a month doing this, and end up spending less then $200 in groceries total in the process (while eating steaks, Argentine shrimp etc).

Just got a notice that you can get 3 free deliveries from Walmart as well, before the end of the year by using the code Delivery on checkout. No 20$ off, but...walmart often has cheaper base prices on things not on sale. Min delivery of $50.

Not as good, but....pretty useful in combo with the free 4 deliveries from safeway lol...thats almost 2 per month for the next 4 months (free delivery eveyr other week) and $80 off the safeway ones to ensure you at least spend the same, if not less, then if you shopped at walmart:)
