He played his mystery box game and let TFA spin its wheels for two hours retelling the greatest hits of the OT, hoping that someone would play with all the toys he left behind. The other part of the problem is whoever is in charge of all this, be it Kennedy or Disney or whoever, giving the directors free reign to do whatever they want with no real vision for where this story is supposed to go. If youre going to go through the effort to get Abrams, who is popular for exactly one reason, you do not let the follow up director have the ability to throw away everything they set up. Its like letting Michael Bay do your first movie and letting the second director go okay, no more explosions. Rian is partly able to ignore a lot of Abrams stuff because there was no substance to the teasing. Abrams biggest contribution to world building was copying the Mos Eisley Cantina. Abrams himself ignored the set up of the previous six movies to tell his own substanceless story. Lets not forget the first major event he had was ~~destroying the entire republic~~ he literally threw away a prequel trilogy worth of culture and world building and an original trilogy worth of conflict setting that up specifically so he could ask shallow questions like what did that vision mean? So yeah Rian is a hack for doing what he did.
