Commericals and edits and all, I remember when I was a kid in the 80's and 90's my friends and I just accepted having a taped off TV version of a movie as "owning" it, we'd bring our crappy low quality tapes to each others house to watch whatever, fast forwarding commercials and all. Was always an interesting surprise when some point later you really did buy the video or eventually the DVD and are surprised by a nude scene that obviously wasn't on TV. >_>

It was just so low-quality in comparison that there was a motive to buy something even if you had it recorded if you wanted it bad enough. Those commercials were a pain..lol

I'd just record random shows I liked, like Disney afternoon stuff, and whatever random movies, which I'm sure changed over the years based on what I was interested in. I remember probably being middle-school-ish aged or early high school and being excited when I finally got all the Bond movies taped when TBS had the marathons all the time. Few years after that was probably when DVD started to be more of an accessible thing.

Counting 12ish as a kid, and that late night Cinemax/showtime/etc shit as porn.

True, and I certainly did own a *few* proper VHS tapes, but like... until probably the late 90's those could be pretty expensive, I didn't have an income and my parents didn't buy a lot of stuff like that. Waiting for it to be on TV and taping was all I could do. >_>

I also taped tons of WCW shows (not PPVs, never ordered any) because I figured they would be lost forever, stupid WWE Network making all that useless now...

this totally reminded me that one time i was done with a session and while i went to clean myself in the bathroom, i noticed the middle-aged woman who lived with us went past my bedroom and looked inside... it was only after i closed the door again i realized i had left the porn running on the tv.

oh such memories are truly lost in time like tears in the rain

I never had access to TV porn, just had to get lucky and hope the station unscrambled enough to get a glimpse of a boob for a second, but it wasn't really worth the effort.

Haha. I'm pretty sure we taped that movie as well but maybe didn't hit record in time, don't think that was on our copy.

But yeah its crazy, even ignoring streaming stuff, movies pop up on cable super fast now, back in the day it was a few years usually before a movie got a "network premiere" on one of the big broadcast networks, then it was gone again for ages.

I uploaded this a million years ago, unfortunately not sure where a lot of those tapes ended up, I think my brother ended up with a lot of them, or they got taped over once we got a real VHS or more likely DVD.

I did not. In fact, I still bought the real commercial copies of movies I really liked even if I had them tapped off TV, so that I could own the real thing. Same as pirating games or whatever, if I really enjoyed playing them I genuinely did buy them out of principle.

Slightly off subject by why did everyone stop saying VCR? VHS is the format and VCR is the device that plays it. People now say "VHS player" but back then everyone said VCR.

I've never heard "VHS player" but perhaps the machine they are referring to doesn't have record capability.

We only had over the air antenna during VHS years. So if a retail VHS gives a 10/10 picture quality, my very long, slow play recordings would be like a 3/10.

So no, I didnt consider my recordings to be owning it.

Or maybe, come to think, people just got used to the terms DVD/Blu-ray player and just transfered it over.

The protection came a few years later, IIRC. The ones at launch and a few years afterwards could be "dubbed" as we called it.

I used to try to edit Godzilla movies together with the two VCR method so it looked like tons of monsters were all interacting... but one random tape wouldnt record right. Of course half of them were from tv and had TBS or TNT or whatever logo in the bottom. I know Sci Fi and AMC was showing them eventually, I forget my timeline though.

Never really thought about it as kid. I recently found an old VHS with Dumbo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and some movie called "Prehysteria" recorded on it. I wouldn't say I "own" any of those now.

Also, is it not technically illegal to record stuff like that?

I remember a TNT recording of Terror of Mechagodzilla got cut off mid-film, so I finished it like a decade or more later off of a Sci-Fi Channel showing. By that point, I already owned the movie on both an official VHS release and a DVD one.

I never went back and rewatched the tape after that. It was just a matter of principle that the film had to be completed. The tape also had Godzilla Versus Monster Zero and Godzilla's Revenge on it.
