Madden Draft Grades
The following is a list of all user teams ordered by the letter grade given to them and then alphabetically. Take little stock in how you are graded. These are not at all an indicator of the ratings to expect from your rookies nor future performance. They are essentially arbitrary. All AI teams are given A grades. KCF's Favorite Picks
I'm going to go through each round of the NFL Draft and highlight my three favorite picks and explain why. For the most part, I look in the early rounds for perfect team fits based on historical production, a visible succession plan to starting job (or immediate starter), players who might be the missing piece to the puzzle, and selections that just make me think, "That guy's going to have a long, productive career somewhere." For the later rounds, I look for players who most likely have a chance of sticking around for a long-ish career for a myriad of reasons. While I do know some of the rookie ratings due to user signings, ratings were not a factor in my analysis nor were players dropping further than expected draft slot. In addition, I will probably list an honorable mention or two and most importantly, a regret pick. What I mean by a regret pick is someone that I believe may have just made a big mistake and went in the wrong direction. I will limit myself to just one per round and only for the first three rounds because honestly how much can you really regret in the sixth round? I will try and limit picks that I made myself, but there will be a few. I will refrain from choosing any Colts or Dolphins picks. At the end of all this, I will also mention my three favorite team draft classes. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... Copied to Clipboard!

KCF0107 07/29/19 11:03:49 PM #12: |
First Round
Browns DE Olivier Vernon (9th overall) - I am singling him out because considering the greater scheme of things, I think the Browns needed a DE more than any other team that picked one this round. In addition to Charles Grant retiring, the Browns shockingly let one of the best DT in the league hit the FA market in Vince Wilfork. The DL heading into the draft was basically just Pierre Woods as the two projected starting DT are a below average guy on the wrong side of 30 that was famously the centerpiece in the Walter Jones/Mike Flynn Colts trade and a complete unknown. Having a pedestrian DL would have doomed the Browns defense and caused yet another setback for a team that has naturally picked in the Top 10 for three straight seasons. The DTs are still what they are, but at least the DEs make them more palatable and gives the team a fighting chance with their underrated LB corps. Pioneers OLB Kyler Fackrell (27th overall) - While I contemplated including both of their first round picks, I am going to highlight just Fackrell. I loved this pick so much that I was a little sad it just came and went on draft night. AI teams get no respect I tell you. Everybody knows that the Pioneers have an elite offense, but the work-in-progress defense started to turn a corner last season. It may come as a shock that the weak link is at LB where otherworldly stud Kamerion Wimbley exists to prey upon others. The Pioneers may have solved that in a single round. Fackrell is the one I believe in more. Not knowing his rating, I think he can unseat incumbent O'Brien Schofield and be the favorite for DRotY. Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (32nd overall) - This is partially up here because of what Ranlom originally intended to do with the pick. I was getting PTSD from my trade with the Wildcats in S8. This was a great pivot though as incumbent DEs Baraka Atkins and Ryan Riddle are starting to wind down and DT Terrance Knighton is just a glorified sack specialist (very low tackle totals for a DT and just five total FFs+FRs in his career). While it was sad for me to see that this was the result of 176-game starter (aka every B8NFLL game) Sam Rayburn leaving the only franchise he has ever known, it appears as if the Chiefs turned a negative into a positive. Will Poe flame out? Maybe, but the Chiefs need to start establishing some sort of defense, and this was a great next step after getting some fresh OLBs and Ss in recent seasons. Honorable Mentions *insert any other DE selection here* Bills HB Todd Gurley (4th overall) Regret Pick - Wildcats selecting CB Ronald Darby over DE Malik Jackson Given the construction of the roster, I get that Darby will likely be good enough to be a starter Week 1 while Jackson is maybe not as likely without user intervention. Still, this defense isn't good enough to be spending a 1st round pick on a CB. Darby isn't quite set up to fail, but he has far and away the greatest bust potential out of any of the 32 1st round picks. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... KCF0107 07/29/19 11:04:40 PM #13: |
Second Round
Hawks SS Keanu Neal (45th overall) - Okay, nobody probably remembers me saying this, but I was contemplating doing something crazy with the Seahawks pick in the 1st round, and it was selecting Keanu Neal. The OT prospects unexpectedly fell to 30, so I shelved that idea with some reservations. What may be the Seahawks' loss will be the Hawks' gain as the Hawks have had some of the best SS production over the years with the retired Roy Williams and Donnie McCleskey. The Hawks' underrated defense might not take much of a hit this season. Packers HB Isaiah Crowell (46th overall) - The Packers may be synonymous with running, but their running game is nothing without Carnell Williams, who is likely playing his final season. The backup HBs have a career 3.4 YPC, which I don't have to tell you how abysmal that is. Something had to change, which is why Crowell was brought in. He would have to work hard to be as useless as Ben Slater and Christine Michael are. I am probably being a little too harsh on Michael as he was just a rookie last season. While it would be stunning to see Crowell come in at the same or lower rating as Slater, I would make Crowell the backup, no questions asked. With the enormous strain Tangicide put on Williams last season (he did say he would do things differently this season), there's a good chance Crowell will see enough touches this season for Tangicide to evaluate him as the long-term successor. Jaguars G Ali Marpet (50th overall) - The Jags used to have a very deep OL, but a couple trades these past two seasons have put a dent into their supply. He gets to be the #1 backup G (depending on how preseason depth charts shake out with the backup OTs and C) behind a 37-year-old and a G who has missed nine games in the past two seasons (Ronald Leary). Marpet is going to get his chances this season, and is placed in a situation to succeed with a solid offense and great OL talent around him. While that probably should have been Clint Boling in this situation, a positive spin on the situation is that Marpet is two years younger. Honorable Mentions Pumpkins DT David Parry (44th overall) Raiders DE Datone Jones (61st overall) Regret Pick - Rams selecting CB Jason Verrett over G Jeff Allen or any of the three other Gs taken later in the round I honestly forced myself to choose something. I didn't really have an issue with any of the picks this round. Good job everyone! While I assume that the Rams and their enormous cap space are just going to take their pick of whatever G they want in free agency, I will pick on them anyway. Now Verrett could very well become a starter or hell, even the #1 CB this season given how tightly bunched everyone is, and Verrett could easily join that group once signed. However, G has been much more of an issue than CB these past few seasons for the team, so they should have probably addressed that sooner in the event they strike out on their presumably top target in free agency. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... Third Round
Redskins DT Star Lotulelei (69th overall) - While I am not looking forward to the possibility of having to spell his name frequently in future game summaries, he landed in a fantastic situation. He gets to be the #1 backup to stalwart Kevin Williams, the supremely underrated Gabe Watson that also features young DEs in J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney. This scary DL could become even scarier fast, and I fully expect Lotuelelei to reap the benefits and succeed the the 36-year-old Williams or 33-year-old Watson eventually. Bengals C Brandon Linder (80th overall) - The Bengals interior OL has trouble staying healthy (starting Gs missed 13 games combined last season alone), which depending on Linder's rating might be great news for his bid for playing time. They could theoretically become the top backup at all three spots, and perhaps a fresh face along the OL will help an offense that feels a little stuck right now Lions SS Karl Joseph (79th overall) - The Lions have made a big push to improve their defense this offseason, so to come away with a possible starter in the middle of the draft after being down some draft picks is a best-case scenario for them. It's a perfect match. Honorable Mentions Jaguars CB E.J. Gaines (82nd overall) Raiders DT Sylvester Williams (93rd overall) Regret Pick - Falcons selecting OTs Tim Martin and Denzelle Good over Karl Joseph (or any safety really) I'm not saying that this is what MMX was thinking, but I get the idea of accumulating multiple players at a single position early to create competition and let the best man win, whenever that may be. However, I think that competition works better in practice with defensive players than it does offensive, and based on how the round shook out, he probably should have grabbed Joseph first, then the OT later. Picking Martin and then "reaching" for a safety, preferably a FS, next would also work. The decline of Thomas Davis is quite sad. After starting every game through the first eight seasons, the injury bug hit Davis and hasn't been the same. He started all 16 games last season, but had just 27 tackles and 2 INTs to his name. He is still far and away the best safety option on the team, and maybe even among the free agents, but they need some depth behind him and the enigma that is Atari Howard. They didn't do so until the 7th round. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... Copied to Clipboard!

KCF0107 07/29/19 11:06:01 PM #15: |
Fourth Round
Packers OLB Reggie Hartley (110th overall) - The Packers are looking a little thin at OLB. Depending on Hartley's rating, I can see him winning the starting job out of the preseason. While Tangicide can obviously reverse any decision the AI makes regarding depth charts, Hartley starting Week 1 behind that stout DL and in front of the pretty good secondary could help make him a 10+ year player in the league. Pioneers HB James White (112th overall) - I believe this was considered a "reach" by the draft board, but he landed at the perfect place if you ask me. As the team transitions from Willis McGahee to Le'Veon Bell, we have absolutely no idea what to expect from the latter. He has just around 50 touches to his name, so we have no idea how productive, efficient, or healthy he's going to be. What we do know is that the Pioneers' offense is a nightmare, so if Bell gets injured, I can see White as the person to step onto the field and flourish instead of returner and former Panthers' draft pick Bernard Pierce, who has 0 touches on offense in his career. Jaguars FS Tre Boston (114th overall) - Sultan is not one to cut his players, and with all of his available cap space likely being tied up with his draft picks, I think we have found the Jags new starting FS for this season at least. The Jags have been blessed with excellent secondary production and impact on the pass D in the past, even in the face of many retirements, but this one was particularly brutal with FS Bob Sanders and SS Michael Lewis both hanging it up after 11 seasons with the club. There's a chance that Boston doesn't work out with the thinnest secondary safety net the team has had to work with, but the Jags D has been solid at worst every year since Sultan took over. I'm a believer. KCF0107 07/29/19 11:10:51 PM #16: |
Fifth Round
Bengals WR Allen Robinson (144th overall) - The last time the Bengals selected in the 5th round (Chris Hogan), the player turned out very well, so who's to say that can do it again? With a new QB at the helm, whether it be Jake Locker, T.J. Yates, or a free agent, perhaps the passing game can take a step forward (I am aware that retired QB Carson Palmer was third in passing yards and led the league in passing TDs) and involve more people so Robinson has a chance to replace Mike Williams or Matt Jones as a starter some day. Jets TE Jesse James (148th overall) - Like the Bengals, the Jets are going to have someone new start at QB (Mike Glennon, Marcus Mariota, David Fales (fat chance), or a free agent). Perhaps they utilize the TE more, and with the current TEs on the roster 34 and 33 years old, James could get a second contract and be one of the few starting TEs to be taken in 5th round or later. Ravens C Austin Reiter (151st overall) - The Ravens entered the draft with just two interior OL on the roster. While another two were selected before Reiter, anything is possible, so with it so barren in Baltimore, he has as good of an opportunity as any OL taken this round to have an opportunity to make his mark and get a second contract. KCF0107 07/29/19 11:11:31 PM #17: |
Sixth Round
Buccaneers TE Jace Amaro (181st overall) - If signed, he instantly becomes the starter. That automatically lands you on this list. Nothing else needs to be said. Ravens MLB Chad Carpenter (183rd overall) - A lot of backup MLBs in 4-3 Ds taken in the 5th or later have found starting jobs later in their careers, including current Ravens starter Rian Wallace. The Ravens' starting LBs were taken at 105th (Young), 158th (Wallace), and 209th overall (Jones), so yeah, I believe in their ability to develop Carpenter into a starter-worthy LB. At 34, Wallace is looking to need a replacement in likely S14. How fitting it would be if Carpenter is the guy. Raiders WR Cody Latimer (189th overall) - With Andy Dalton turning the corner in his fourth season after relieving an injured Kirby Freeman, the Raiders' passing offense was the best it has been in a long time. With WR Anquan Boldin now retired, those targets are there for the taking. With the team still waiting for breakout seasons from former first round picks Brandon Marshall and Doug Baldwin, a late round rookie WR has an opportunity to make a name for himself with a team that was so close to reaching the Super Bowl. Add in some return ability (or so the scouting report said), and that could provide the boost in development to become a career slot receiver or if everything breaks right, a starting gig. Honorable Mentions Rams MLB Allen Rogers (182nd overall) Jaguars OLB Justin McGee (178th overall) --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... Seventh Round (or when I decided to forgo honorable mentions and talk about five players)
Redskins TE Junior Spires (197th overall) Pumpkins TE Bruce Otto (204th overall) - In recent seasons, plenty of backup TEs taken late in the draft have received multi-year contracts after their rookie season, regardless of production. There's a chance one or both of these TEs has their NFL dreams still alive next season. Patriots MLB Stan Massey (193rd overall) Buccaneers MLB Raymond Els (213th overall) Seahawks MLB Reuben Reed (222nd overall) - As mentioned with the Ravens in the sixth round, 4-3 D backup MLBs have a history of brighter futures. With the Pats and Bucs LB situations in flux and the careers of the Seahawks MLBs winding down, all three of these have a somewhat decent chance of being in the league in a few seasons and a remote chance of becoming starters, whether for the teams that drafted them or somewhere else. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... Favorite Three Draft Classes
Columbus Pioneers MLB Kyle Emanuel (24th) OLB Kyler Fackrell (27th) OT Cyrus Kouandjio (56th) CB Ike Foley (88th) HB James White (112th) G Jamil Douglas (120th) OT Kevin O'Neal (152nd) OT Bryant Graham (184th) DT Michael Sikes (216th) Upon looking at the various draft classes, this was instantly my favorite class They shored up their biggest weakness on defense, and they retooled their OL that was pilfered during RFA. All of these rookies, except for the spare OT should have clearly defined roles and in positions to succeed or at the very least show the front office that they deserve to stick around for awhile. The only thing that I would have done differently is probably take a SS in the 3rd instead of Foley and take a true flyer on a slot corner CB with one of the late OT picks they made. Jacksonville Jaguars OLB Aaron Lynch (6th) G Ali Marpet (50th) CB E.J. Gaines (82nd) FS Tre Boston (114th) SS Ibraheim Campbell (146th) OLB Justin McGee (178th) CB Edgar Williams (210th) TE Frank Emanuel (218th) The Jags needed OLB and DB help, and they got it in spades. They got who they hope will be what Boling was on the path to becoming, and they also got a TE they don't exactly need, but he might be nice to have as a backup FB during games. They did nothing flashy, which may make this a puzzling inclusion to some. In what has suddenly become a more competitive AFC South these past two seasons though, the Jags did everything right during the draft in the face of recent and looming retirements. Washington Redskins DE Jadeveon Clowney (5th) OT Rob Havenstein (37th) DT Star Lotulelei (69th) G Max Garcia (101st) C Andy Gallik (133rd) OLB Neil Parker (165th) TE Junior Spires (197th) Washington's lines looked scary before, but damn am I glad to not be in the NFC East! I have a feeling the first five picks will become starters within three years. It's rare to see a team dominant on both lines and have a lot of succession opportunities coming up. Maybe there's some concern that the transition doesn't result in business as usual, but with the team getting a jump start now have players start out alongside DT Kevin Williams, OTs Leonard Davis/Daniel Inman, and C Melvin Fowler, I wouldn't bet against them. Signing Draft Picks
Quite a few teams have done it already, but now's the time to get those draftees' signatures and have them suit up for your squad. It is essentially just like signing your own free agents, but you don't have to worry about holdouts/franchise tags, and you typically have far fewer players to sign. There are a few things you need to keep in mind as you read your PM. One, you will not know the overall ratings until they are signed. That is an in-game mechanic and not something by my design. Two, the desired deals for each player, in terms of length, is based on where they were taken. It is as follows: Top 5 - Six years 6-10 - Five years 11-32 - Four years 2nd-4th rounds - Three years (will be eligible for RFA) 5th-7th rounds - One year Once again, you do not have to offer them their exact deals and can change their length, but I advise you to sign them to the length that they ask for because if you change the length, they might ask for considerably more money. The deadline to sign your rookies will be August 6th at 9 PM ET. Should you idle, I will sign all your rookies to the deals that they are asking for (such a severe punishment I know). If you have roster space issues, then I will prioritize players who will fill roster holes and then in descending order of when they were selected until your roster is filled. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... I forgot to mention this during the draft but I remember KCF being surprised that, in 11 drafts, we have had a different team pick #1 overall every year so far. Well it's actually happened recently in real life too!
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/ Starting with the Raiders in 2007, a different team got the #1 pick up till 2018 when the Browns ruined it by getting back to back number 1 picks. The Rams may have picked twice at #1 in that time frame but remember that in 2016 they traded up into that spot with the Titans who originally had the pick. I'm not positive but I believe this is the longest stretch in the NFL where a different team had the #1 overall pick, at least originally. Wonder if our streak ends this year or we break the real life streak! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Eddv posted...The 1 win Cowboys. Good question. I remember being pretty much certain that we were going to lose to the Patriots last year because they were still winless at 0-9 when we first played them. I also figured we had a better than usual chance to beat the Dolphins the following week because losing to the Pats was our 3rd straight loss to drop us to 5-5. We beat the Dolphins the following week, and then beat the Pats in the rematch the week after. Anyway, all of that is to say my guess is it's probably possible, but insanely unlikely based on the RNG of the game. My assumption when a team has horrible stats in comparison to their opponent but still wins is the game is making the wins/losses for teams balance themselves out or something. Like despite having a pretty decent record given the disparity in player ratings in Bills/Dolphins match-ups, I'm pretty certain the Bills have never come close to outperforming the Dolphins statistically in any of those games, and it has instead been very much the opposite even when the Dolphins lose. ... Extremely unlikely in B8NFLL thanks to our inaugural season fantasy draft. I have brought this up several times before, but no team has risen above a team rating of 91 nor fallen below 83. The original rosters for teams had multiple in the 60s and upper 90s. Having the talent levels much closer than people probably realize makes the prospect of going winless virtually impossible.

Free Agency
See all those players in the free agent sheet? Now is the time to attempt to sign them to your team ahead of the preseason. I say attempt because you are in theory competing against the other 31 teams for the services of all availble free agents. Unlike the three offseason events involving signings, the base/desired deal that I will eventually list may not be enough to sign them, and almost definitely will not if it is a high-rated player and/or the top-rated free agent at each position. If you do intend to seek out one or more of those players, you will probably want to send out a custom offer in excess of what they want, whether that means years, total money, signing bonus, or what's usually the case, a combination of the three. You may not offer a contract to a player that goes beyond their age 34 season unless the base deal already extends beyond that. If a free agent is 31 right now and wants a two-year contract, you may go as far as four years because that would take him through his age-34 season (31, 32, 33, 34). If another free agent is also 31 and wants a five-year contract, you can offer him those five years but no more than that. Any player 28 and under is not affected by this rule as the max contract length, seven years, will take them through their age-34 season or younger. Not every free agent is up on the sheet. I would estimate that somewhere between 15-25% of all free agents are on there. The free agent sheet just lists the Top 8 and worst at each position. If there's a certain kind of player that you are looking for that either isn't or don't know if they are on the sheet, feel free to ask me, and I will get back to you if such a player fits that description. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... There will be three periods of free agency, each subsequent period spanning fewer real life days than the previous one. Here are the tentative real life days each period will last:
1st - 7 days 2nd - 4 days 3rd - 1 day Here are some sample contract offers that I will accept, including to more simple approaches: 4 / $7.00 mil / $1.40 mil 3 years default, +$2 mil total salary, +$500k signing bonus 2 years default When you give me an offer, you are offering my consent to offer the player the closest deal that he will consider, meaning that if you offer 4 / $6.00 mil / $2.00 mil and he will only consider it when it is 4 / $7.00 mil / $2.00 mil, I will offer him the latter. If that does not sit well with you, then you have the simpler options I previously laid out or you can explicitly say not to offer the contract unless he will consider those exact terms. When you PM me the offers, I want you to include a header that says "[Your Team]'s Offers" so that I don't accidentally open them. In addition to being the commissioner, I am also the Dolphins and Colts' GM, so there could be some conflict of interest. Thus, the best way around that is for me to not open those PMs until the deadline for the current phase has passed. I have default PM settings, so you can tell if and when I open a PM of yours. Also, free agency is almost always not my way of team building, and my only plans right now are to offer a QB who didn't even qualify for the free agent sheet to become my #3 QB. However, I might do something big with the Colts given their cap space. Under no circumstances may you ask me if so and so player will consider a certain deal or anything of that nature. You may ask me general questions regarding free agency but nothing that goes against the spirit of it or give you a competitive advantage. If you do have a question and use the PM system instead of the topic, make sure that you are clear that you are asking a question, or I might not open it out of fear the PM containing contract offers. There are two types of contract offers that I will immediately discard: 1. Any mentioning of the word maximum pertaining to total salary and/or signing bonus 2. A massive one year contract (possibly two-year contracts depending on the situation) The first one I have actually received in the past. I threw it out because it is both unfair in the laziest of ways and also impossible as you can go quite high in total salary, and I do not want to spend 20 minutes inputting a single offer. The second one is also unfair to teams with lots of cap space to maintain artificial flexibility for future seasons by using up a lot of cap space this season and then sign that same player next season to an uncontested market or below-market contract in the following offseason in a process they can repeat as many times as they can/want. Also due to fairness, any cuts you wish to make during free agency must be done well ahead of time to give other users enough of a chance to make a bid on their services: - 96 hours prior to the end of Period 1 - 48 hours prior to the end of Period 2 - No cuts allowed in Period 3 --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... Every user should have been told when they signed their rookies in the spreadsheet or via PM of their cap space and roster holes entering free agency. Should free agency end with there still being holes on your roster, the AI will fill those holes for you. You do not have to be under the salary cap at the end of free agency. I will give users several days after free agency ends to do so.
This will take some time, but the following posts of mine will contain the base deals for all the players in the free agent sheet. Once I do that, consider free agency as having officially begun. The deadline to send me offers for the first period of free agency will be 9 PM ET on Friday, August 16th. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ... One final piece of advice though:
If you intend to submit an offer to a player rated 82+ and do not intend to make them a starter, I highly suggest that you offer them a deal no longer than 2 years in length. While some positions are far more sensitive than others, it is probably best to assume that their morale will sharply decrease and can possibly demand a trade after just one season. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy https://imgur.com/VfpY7tg ...
