Well, it depends on how old tc is, but when I was 15 (13 years ago), I don't believe companies were giving out a million dollars to the top winner Ina single event.

Unless you were wired on ritalin and were willing to pretty much give up all pretense of having anything resembling a life (or even playing any games outside of your single game of specialization), you never would have been good enough at any game for it to matter.

Also, if you were going full-pro you'd pretty much have to accept that you were going to be too old for competition and would have to retire before you were even legally able to drink, and there's a good chance you'd have repetitive stress injuries (like carpal tunnel) you'd need to eventually have surgery to fix.

The worst part is, if this kid is like most, he probably winds up tanking that million fairly quickly. Odds are he's not going to be investing soundly, spending within his means, and extending his savings far into the future. He might not even be able to parlay it into college savings (assuming he even wants to). And if he's really unlucky, he might trust his parents to handle his money for him and then they wind up stealing most of it.

The idea of pro-gaming is usually much better than the reality of it. It's similar to being a "Let's Play"-type celebrity on YouTube or on Twitch in that respect.

Nah, it didn't reach this amount of money until like 2011 (but really, more close to 2014). The MLG stuff was less than 100k back then.

Gamers like Fatal1ty didn't even make 1 million price money together. And he is probably the biggest esporter out of my era. It is that he made his money with sponsorship deals. The thing is back than you had to play high skill level games like Quake en Starcraft. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of talented gamers don't play games like Fortnite making the competition easier aswell.

Gaming tournaments really only have huge pay outs when developers themselves sponsor the tournaments. I could be wrong, but the highest paying fighting games are Tekken and Street Fighter, and the biggest tournaments are sponsored by Capcom and Bandai Namco respectively.

Not sure about the Star Craft tourneys in Korea.

Most gamers make most of their money through sponserships and streaming after cultivating a fan base (I think).

Really wish competitive Nintendo games would start getting sponsored by the company themselves.

You don't know a damn thing about me....I've won (mainly in the Arcades, mind you) plenty of Fighting Game Tourneys (SF, MvC, Tekken, etc) and while I played them alot, I still went to HS school/college fulltime, had a job and GFs...so don't give me that Bull****

As for the prizes, no they didn't give away that much...if you're lucky, you get a piece of the entry fee pool ($100-500) bucks or maybe a T-Shirt or some free Games

Correct

From marketwatch: "The Pennsylvania teen, who goes by the screen name Bugha, played the insanely popular battle royale shooter game eight to 10 hours a day, his mother told ESPN"

Large prize pools are really just about grabbing headlines. The players making big money in esports are the ones with sizable a sizable stream audience and/or sponsorship deals. Typically that means the top earners are the ones who perform consistently well for a few years and have the wherewithal to turn their success into a brand, not the ones who spike a single tournament.

Out of curiosity I looked up Justin Wong's winnings and I'm surprise it is only about $82k in total. I'd assume he has/had other forms of income via sponsorship though. Last I heard, he's working for Capcom in some form or another. I do wonder how well older professional/former professional gamers compare to those in their teens and 20's. I'd imagine that slightly faster reaction time can make a big difference.

Well, he's in the FGC, and that genre isn't quite as big/popular on the 'Mainstream' eSport levels such as FPS, Dota, MoBA, etc games...
