This new update needs to be installed in order to access any network functions.

My ps4 stopped playing disc's and updating months ago.

All I had left was digital downloads and now I can't play those without an update that I can't install.

Fuck you Sony.

Are you sure you can't play them at all? I think that on Xbox One, you can decline an update but will be unable to play online or something along those lines.

Perhaps those are system updates only, but I thought it was updates period. It would be a weird thing for one system to have but not others.

So it has network functionality but can't run the updater? And that happened at the same time as discs not working? I was going to say to put the update on a USB drive but that's probably not going to work either.

I try to load downloaded games and it prompts me to download the update.

I say updateater and it brings me back to the home screen.

So no network functionality. Can't login. Can't play digital downloads, can't open store.

I've spoken to tech support in the past and did all their suggestions and it never fixed the issues. Their answer was send it to them and pay X and they'll "fix it".

But still this is really messed up and I'm hesitant to buy a new ps4 with the ps5 looming, especially if it will play ps4 disc's.

That's a pain. I had to send in my Vita for like $100 because things always break outside of warranty.

This seems to be teh most likely case

This is everybody's reminder that DRM is a cancer that causes more issues for legitimate, paying users than it does for the people it's actually trying to stop.

you should be able to download the update off a PC onto a USB stick and install the update on the pS4 from there

Have you tried playing something you know has worked on your current version before?

They've basically always locked titles into using a minimum firmware version corresponding to (near) when the title came out since the PSP, so if you downloaded something that came out after you stopped updating this isn't surprising.

I feel like I could successfully use arguments used against me in my "fuck u square lol" topic against you here haha.

But, yeah, that sucks. Maybe try an Xbox next? They have excellent customer support.

PS4 updates are less than 1 GB, you really shouldn't need a 1 TB stick. You don't have any 1 GB USBs lying around? >_>

Also I exclusively buy digital games on my PS4 and the updater has always worked regardless of the other network funtionalities being disabled - like, that's specifically the one thing they allow you (and constantly prompt you) to do - so I'm really not sure what's happening in your situation. Either way, a simple USB stick will solve it.

I would just get a new one. You can't even use discs or anything. The money you would save being able to buy games on discs probably offsets the cost of the entire console before long. Too bad you didn't strike during the prime day sales on PS4. Or maybe limp along til black Friday.

Was one of Sony's suggestions to unplug it from the wall for 30 seconds

because most weird firmware issues my PS4 has had was usually solved by that.

that's the other thing is the updater should always work no matter what. That would tell me something is fundamentally busted with your unit.

I meant GB not TB... But no I don't have any that large lying around I don't think.

They did suggest doing this and it's the one thing I haven't done, however it's not like these problems just came up now. It's had problems installing updates in the past.

I just have a feeling that the disc reading optic error I'm getting coupled with the can't install updates error, it's all just not worth the time.

I can get it to read disc's if I restart the system over and over and pray. I essentially am blowing in my NES, the last time I tried to laod a game after 15 offs and ons I finally gave up.

As for the digital downloads, nothing will work, everything says to do the update.

I guess I will try to install from the USB but it's not like the system isn't downloading it. It downloads, it's when it tries to then install that I immediately get the error.

They have those? Geez, I remember when they were something like 128k and all you could really do was transfer Word documents on them.
