The tone of the miniseries was awful. It was far more comedy than horror, and super campy But that kinda describes the book. Much more time is dedicated to the kids being kids than Pennywise, tbh. Pennywise was always described as campy, not menacing. He did far more slapstick (with real world consequences) than anything deliberately menacing. Even when he was being deliberately menacing, he took the form of the children's fears, which again, were campy, because they're children. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] ... Copied to Clipboard!

Pennywise was never campy in the book. He took on the kids fears, but he made them serious, disgusting, and dangerous. He didn't play jokes, he tormented.
And the book was pretty even in tone. The miniseries was not, it was always more comedic and light. It missed the underlying bleakness of the book, the idea that the kids were truly alone in their world and their struggles because the reality of the town had sunk into the adults. ... The Mist and Christine are awful The Mist was okay. It was actually very true to the original work IIRC, except some of the unimportant intro stuff and, admittedly, the very different ending. --- ~Phoenix Nine~ ~Victory needs no explanation; defeat allows none.~ ... Copied to Clipboard!

I feel like a lot of people think what makes an adaptation good is how close it is to the original, instead of how well it is adapted to a new medium.

In fairness, it sounds like the studios are still going to try again, maybe it can be better. Do you honestly trust them after the sheer garbage they made? Having followed the project for ages, I can give a little trust because of the development hell it went through, that clearly was not the desired product. The Conjuring is good. Not enough ghost movies have the confidence to rely on atmosphere and tension as opposed to just a series of jump scares.

It was a weak adaptation and a pretty mediocre movie on top. It was filled with the trappings of modern Hollywood horror movies. It will not age well with it's excessive jump scares and baffling 80's nostalgia.
