Seemed like he was talking in regards to professional athletes. They have more to risk from being injured and they're lifting a lot more than someone just trying to stay moderately in shape at the gym. I'm not going to do nearly as much dmg if I tweak my back doing 250lbs as someone legitimately strong throwing up 500+. Plus if I do it, I'm on my couch for a weekend. I haven't fucked up my career.

He didn't go into much detail about it. How are cleans better? Those seem even more explosive and dangerous. (Albeit you'll be moving much less weight.) What safe lifts are there?

Deadlift was always probably my least favorite of the popular lifts to do

too many people do them without straight backs. it kills your back. so many people don't even have proper posture at the gym

Well, even a beginner weightlifter should realize that back workouts are the easiest to fuck up. When I used to religiously lift I just did machine and loose-dumbbell-only exercises in regards to the back. Was pretty careful about that.
