Board 8 > So anyone interested in a Board 8 Pokemon League?

So for awhile I've been wanting to play through all the Pokemon games in order, but I wanted to do something extra along with it and I figured a Pokemon League would be a cool idea.

So here's the idea, each month everyone will play through a particular gen. Then during last week of the month we start a tournament using everyone's teams that used during their playthrough.

Now it's still in the formulative stage so I'm not too sure about some of the finer details like. Should post game content be allowed? Do we want to ban any Pokemon? I figured it won't start for a month or two at least, so this would be a good time to establish any rules or stipulations as well.

That's a neat idea. Me and 3 friends once had a race to the finish on X/Y with a mini tournament after and it was really neat. I came in second cause the 1st place guy went super try hard on his team and ev trained and shit. I was like psh, fuck that shit.

As much as I'd like this, I don't have the ability to access anything past B2/W2 and even then don't own every gen. Sad.

I'd be up for anything from the first 4 gens except snoozefest Platinum.

Should probably only ban legendaries if anything IMO, because that rabbit hole never ends

There would have to be a lot of rules set to make this work properly. Level caps, bans on legendaries, etc.

Wouldn't really be fun when your team of level 50ish mons goes up against the other dude who just leveled all his guys to 100 and had 4 legendaries because he wanted to win

Having the tournament on Pokemon Showdown would deal with level differences etc but it's not a perfect solution admittedly

I also am not really interested in anything with the games themselves but might do stuff on Showdown. Even on Showdown though I really only like playing randomized formats because making teams is hard and time-consuming.

I'm not opposed to Showdown, the only main issue I see is it being more of a competitive focused situation. Then again if most people want a competitive tournament, I'm totally fine with that.

Also if we do Showdown do we want to apply generation specific rules. For example if we're doing a Kanto tournament do we want to do stuff like no held items? Or just keep it to Gen 1 mons

Worth mentioning that Showdown supports these rulesets already. For example you can challenge people to something like Gen 1 (Custom Game), and the simulator will use gen 1 mechanics while only allowing you to bring in teams that are legal in gen 1. (ie. only gen 1 mons/moves with no items, etc)

Of course if you wanted to do only gen 1 mons but with maintaining modern battle mechanics, you'd have to enforce that yourself I think.

To be fair, X and Y makes it way too easy to EV train during the main game. Super Training was one of the reasons why those games were so easy.

A little bit, if I need to do some leveling I'll have it in the back of my head. I've never really focused on it though. Same goes for Natures and IVs, unless I've got multiples of the same Pokemon I'm really not worried about it.

personally, if I know I want to use a pokemon on my team, I'll often catch several and then pick the one with the best nature/IVs

I give zero thought to EVs though

I wouldn't really expect of a non-competitive battler to know about EVs. I suppose in the later gens they did introduce the training stuff that you can use I think, but before that there was nothing in game to tell you that "battling this pokemon gives you +2 EVs in this stat, and that you can get a max of 255 EVs in a stat, and a max of whatever it is total, etc" you had to derive all that info from the internet.

So here's what I'm thinking. Once I get off work I'll probably open a Google Sheets up for sign ups, also might register teams that way as well. Do we want to do a traditional tournament or just have as many matches as we want in a set period of time and the one with the most wins against individual opponents wins
