Board 8 > What've been your favourite movies so far this year?

I'm in a movie-watching mood and have been largely unaware of any new movies this year unless they're something I could take the kids to (so, animated and Marvel movies) or continuations of/new projects by people I'm already invested in (John Wick, Us). What've y'all liked this year? I'm looking for recommendations. If they're available digitally or were released on Netflix, all the better!

Also looking for opinions on a couple movies specifically, if anyone watched 'em:

- Booksmart
- Fast Colour
- Alita: Battle Angel (out this week I think?)

Booksmart is literally the worst movie I've ever seen. It had something like four or five screenwriters and it completely shows.

This also made me realize John Wick 3 is the only movie I've seen so far that I really enjoyed, which is really sad.

I desperately want to see Long Day's Journey into Night, which you'd probably like.

Also Her Smell is supposed to be okay but I really like Elizabeth Moss no matter what

This year all I have seen in theaters is Detective Pikachu, Glass, Alita, and the two Marvel films.

Alita is probably my favorite of the bunch. The only reservation is that it doesn't really resolve the story and it doesn't look like it made enough money to get a sequel, but I think it still is worth a watch!

Yeah my year has been light too. Captain Marvel (solid!), Avengers (okay!), John Wick 3 (good!) and Lego Movie 2 (solid! remember that this came out??). Wanted to see Us but by the time my partner and I could make it work it wasn't showing. The only other movies from this year I've seen were Apollo 11 and Brexit, both very enjoyable.

Was Glass the sorta follow-up to Unbreakable?

Yeah that's kinda what I was expecting. I'm okay with a style over substance movie if it absolutely nails the aesthetic.

Alita was a gorgeous film with incredible worldbuilding and a plot that is good enough.

Definitely worth seeing.

Yeah, Glass is the final film in the unbreakable trilogy. It's definitely the weakest of the three, but still has it's bright spots.

I'm bummed i never got out to watch alita on imax

will probably watch it this week on my computer. I read up on the original manga run to get hyped up.

So far, An Elephant Sitting Still, High Life, and Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Toy Story 4, Us, and Endgame are my favorite so far, but usually my favorite films of the year come out in the fall/early winter.

I've only seen Endgame and Detective Pikachu.

Unimpressed by both so surely not them.

Looking forward to getting Okko's Inn soon on bluray though.

I have seen far fewer films this year than normal. My favorite might be Cold Pursuit, but I wouldn't call it a great film.

i was going to say "i've only seen one movie this year" but i already forgot captain marvel came out. very mediocre movie.

endgame was good, though!

Really enjoyed Shazam and Godzilla. Lego Movie 2 and How to Train Your Dragon 3 too, but guessing you've seen those if you've been to animated things.

Definitely not Hellboy.

Avengers: Endgame Really Good
Captain Marvel Meh it's alright.
Godzilla Story sucks but monsters fighting is always pretty cool.
Aladdin Ok but nothing amazing
Shazam Fun but not great
Detective Pikachu It's ok. Nothing great.
Spider-Man Good visuals and I like Spider-Man so probably behind Endgame on the list.

Man I haven't seen many new films this year.
