To my bones. I play more JRPGs than I do any other genre, and that has been the way for me since Dragon Warrior and the first Final Fantasy.

Not for the last 20 years or so.

Basically, once WRPGs improved (starting around the time of the original Baldur's Gate), I jumped on that train and left JRPGs behind forever.

FFVIII being hot garbage was the start of that downfall, and FFXII being less fun than watching paint dry pretty much killed any vestigial interest forever. Kingdom Hearts might have been able to keep winning me over with Disney and Square nostalgia, but then they decided to shove their head so far up their own asses that they could taste small intestine, so by the time they got around to KHIII I couldn't even muster up the slightest illusion of giving a shit.

Suikoden's about the only other series that might have been able to keep me reeled in a bit longer because Suikoden V was awesome - but then Konami decided to murder that franchise and we never got another worthwhile game again, so it didn't. And at this point, if they announced Suikoden VI tomorrow, I'd assume they'd ruin it the same way they've ruined every other franchise they have over the last few years, so I wouldn't even care.

This right here. Its very rare that any modern jrpg even comes close to holding a candle to western rpgs

Yes indeed.

Also, it annoys me how many people think JRPGs are Final Fantasy and nothing else. Like, there's some amazing JRPGs out there today that have nothing to do with FF or Square-Enix. The Kiseki series is my personal favourite these days and it has some of the most incredible worldbuilding of any game series ever.

It's because no one cares about hipster JRPGs that were never actually ported outside of Japan.

In the past for sure. Nowadays I play them pretty rarely. I think the last one I played was ffxv and that was fairly westernized anyway.

I would go hard for a new disgaea though. Assuming atlus doesn't go bankrupt soon.

Never underestimate the import market, man.

Favorite example: I mean, I love Fire Emblem, but it's got nothing on Super Robot Wars, and that franchise is more than three times bigger (in terms of number of titles). It's been a big part of my JRPG experience for almost a decade and a half.

It's more of a game by game basis instead of genre vs genre.
There are some phenomenal modern JRPGs and WRPGs, but there are also a ton of bad JRPGs and WRPGs too.

Literally every Kiseki game except for two have been translated, ported, and released worldwide (and the two exceptions both have fan translations available online).

Try again.

The first game in the series, Trails in the Sky FC, is $25 new on PC (less if you grab it during a sale), so it's pretty easy to get into the series without breaking the bank.

I like crpgs and jrpgs. Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale etc. Im currently playing FFXIV.

Couldn't get into Elder Scrolls, only Bethesda game I've really spent time with was Fallout 3 and I didn't even finish it.

I liked Witcher story but the first game has bad gameplay. One day I might try to force myself to go through it, I'd like to play 3 in particular but I don't like not finishing the first games beforehand.
