I just read an article that nearly 1 in 3 Americans has a criminal record, which seems staggering to me:
http://www.ncsl.org/research/labor-and-employment/barriers-to-work-individuals-with-criminal-records.aspx

So, I'm curious how representative CE is of that statistic. Have you ever been arrested? If so, what was the outcome? And has it made your life significantly more difficult?

No, and I probably should have been on multiple, drunken occasions. But, I always seemed to get a cool cop who didn't care what kind of nonsense I was doing.

on topic, yes, i have been placed under arrest.

don't you have a "criminal record" for something as small as a minor traffic violation (ie speeding ticket)? i ctrl+f'd through the article for "criminal record" and don't see how they define the term.

I think a criminal record is basically any arrest for a misdemeanor or felony. Traffic violations aren't usually reported in those statistics unless it's a DUI or something highly dangerous.

Got arrested and locked up for a weekend when my girlfriend at the time attacked me and tried to murder me. She called her cop uncle when I pushed her hands off my throat. The cops denied bail (by lying about where I could go stay) and refused to give me my antidepressants. Had to stay on probation for 6 months while waiting for the trial. And my ex had to plead the fifth as the alleged victim because her only other option was perjury. No charges were ever filed against her.

Arrested. Booked. Taken to county jail. Bailed out after 30 hours. Criminal allegation dismissed weeks later.

Still no criminal convictions on my record. I have about 3 traffic tickets total and that's it.

Nope. Pretty much the extent of my dealings with the police are a couple minor traffic tickets and warnings, and them showing up at my apartment once because someone called in a noise complaint that I still don't understand to this day (was home alone quietly watching a movie, couldn't have heard it if I stepped out my room and closed the door, much less from a neighboring apartment - also, it was mid-day on a weekend).

Been in the back of police car after they stopped me for having a brake light out. They ran an insurance check to make sure I wasn't driving uninsured and also that the car had a valid MOT, then issued me a ticket that I had ten days to get it fixed.

(Laws may vary in America but in the UK, Scotland in this case, this is the process if they pull you over for a car issue outwith an accident. Provided you get the ticket stamped by a garage to say that you've had the issue repaired within the time limit there is no fine or points on your licence)

I've heard this story way too many times. What happened to you? Were charges dropped? I'm assuming you had a restraining order placed against you after the arrest, right?

No. Only had two interactions with cops throughout my life.

1) Got a ride home in a cop car once when I broke my foot during basketball practice and the cops happened to see me limping out with a friend of mine trying to support me.
2) Got lost in a building while on a trip overseas, while disoriented I almost stumbled into the ladies' room because I couldn't read the signs and didn't know I was headed there. A cop who happened to be nearby managed to stop me and point me in the right direction before much embarrassment could ensue.

the worst thing ever happened to me, was my family was trying to cross the border into Canada. and we had a Japanese exchange student with us we were taking on a day trip to Vancouver. it was her, my mom, my sister, my dad and me. and me and my dad only, were asked to leave the car and talk to some woman inside. and we basically got accused of sex trafficking. it really pissed me off. also she wanted ID, and she didn't consider our US army ID's to be valid ID (my dad had a retired Army ID card, and I at the time still had my Dependent ID) . I don't even remember how we finally got through. but I remember entering Canada that day somehow we did

Charges were dropped when she plead the fifth. I got my life back and could actually get a full time job instead of reporting to a probation officer every week. There was a restraining order out against me for another 6 months after the charges were dropped, even after she failed to change her address for it (which they made me find, despite the fact that she had a restraining order out against me) and failed to show up for two hearings regarding it.

Last time I saw her, she came out to see my band play and stood 5 feet in front of me all set. Now I refuse to play any shows if the venue wont kick her out.

no. at the most, I placed in the back of a cop car for ditching back in high school, but I think the officer let me off because he was being racist, and knew that if he got me in trouble, it would have been bad for the both of us.

Mine was "criminal trespassing" when me and some friends tried to rob a construction site.

We were also watched for embezzlement, impersonation, the sale of stolen merchandise.

They could never pin the other stuff because it was petty and no one really took a real interest about it.

But we all got older and eventually calmed down with the shenanigans before we got into any real trouble.
