Back in the good old days, if you got stuck on something in a video game, you look it up on youtube and then watch like a minute video of how to do it and that's it. Then you move on with your life.

But nowadays, if you're stuck on something in a video game and look up the solution on youtube, you get this:

-Thumbnail with an exaggerated person's face on it, with a red arrow pointing to literally nothing and a title that is typed out LIKE THIS!?!?!?!?! The shortest video is 20 minutes long.
-click on the video and hit a 15 second unskippable ad if you somehow don't have adblocker
-30 second intro plays with various clips of the guy doing wacky stuff while 8-bit music plays in the background
-"What's up youtube!? [Channel name] here! And today I'm going to show you how to get past this part in the videogame. But first! This video is sponsored by dollar shave club!"
-1 minute ad of Dollar Shave Club / Nord VPN / whatever plays
-"Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe! Follow me on instagram and twitter! Subscribe to my Twitch stream! Check out my facebook page! Become a member of my subreddit and discord! And check out my Patreon page! You can get access to exclusive streams and if you donate $5 or more, I'll put your name at the end of the video!"
-Guy then proceeds to talk about his personal experiences growing up with the video and how it got him out of a dark time in his life or some shit, all the while jumpcutting cuz God-forbid there's more than 0.5 seconds of dead air between sentences.
-Another ad plays. This time it's 3 minutes but you can actually hit the skip ad button in 5 seconds now.
-10 minutes in, we're finally in the video game part! He then proceeds to shove his face cam feed in the corner, taking up 25% of the screen.
-Guy tries to do the thing multiple times, but keeps failing. Showing a wacky face reaction and then jumpcutting to the next failed attempt.
-Takes him 10 minutes with all the dumb failed attempts he left in the video. All the while, he has to comment on every little fucking thing he sees or does.
-Finally, he does the thing, but barely explains anything about it.
-"Well I hope that helped. Don't forget to subscribe to see more of my content! And check out my Patreon!"
-Patreon names fill the page, then a 1 minute endslate appears that shows a couple of similar videos from the guy, all while 8-bit music plays
-Another ad loads in for some reason, but this time it's 15 seconds and you can't skip it.

Youtube needs a cataclysmic reboot. People do not know how to get to the fucking point anymore and are more concerned with shoving their fat face in everything and making a brand of themselves than actually delivering quick and helpful content

Yes, I'm an old man and yes, I'm mad! >_>

youtube got ruined when people realized you could turn it into a career. now everyone uploads shit on there with the intent of becoming a well-paid internet celebrity rather than just uploading a video because they think it's funny, putting a gameplay vid up because they want to share what they did etc

I usually prefer guides, but for stuff like collectables in an open world, it's usually easier to watch a video so you see where it is instead of having a vague description.

They both have their pros and cons >_>

Most of that isnt true. Yes there are people doing lets plays who are bad at games, but if you want a no commentary walkthrough of a game hats all you have to type into the search bar. The stuff you described is easily avoidable. I havent seen an ad on YouTube in years so if youre seeing a bunch of them then its your own fault for not downloading adblocker.

Not quite but sometime after this was happening when corporations stuck their dicks into these channels and Google decided "sure go ahead, put as many dicks and ads deep inside as many obnoxious content creators' butts as you want who gives a shit! We don't!"

Yeah, I miss when it was just people fucking around and sharing short fun videos. Like a short 20 second video of a CEmen telling his dad he does cocaine and getting his ass beat or a DMC3 Vergil combo video with Linkin Park music playing in the background. Those were unironically better than what we get today. Now everyone feels like they have to make a brand name for themselves and artificially inflate their videos.

Most people on YouTube now lack charm in any way except that omnipresent formulaic chalky nice-guy demeanor that only fools kids. And I think formulaic is the key here. I can't describe how many off-the-beaten-path entertainment channels I've tried to watch where it feels like they printed out a checklist of "how a gamer/streamer should act" and follow it religiously. Their personality doesn't shine through at all and the act of even watching them is simply jarring. They clearly have quotas for themselves that result in bloated garbage that is not really informative at all compared to their length.

Fun intros like an 8bit theme felt new and endearing like 13 years ago, now it marks you as part of the herd.

Even people that have talent and good judgement in creating their content may be clipping their wings by adhering to these tropes believing it's the only way for their content to reach people.

Oh god I hate looking up recipes these days for that reason.

You're not kidding. I just want a list of steps, but when I look for a dish to cook, I feel like I have to read an essay and every step has a paragraph attached to it. It's fucking ridiculous. I miss the internet from like 10+ years ago >_>

No matter what I am looking for on youtube, if your video title says what the contents of the video is, then just get to the damn point. Otherwise I close and find another video.

Though last time this happened for me was BotW. Finally found a person that posted shrines. No intro, no dialogue; just shows you how to do the shrine just like I was needing. Unfortunately that was a rarity among most people posting BotW videos on youtube.

I know this topic post is mostly hyperbole for effect but like... this doesn't remotely happen at all and if you find it everywhere it's mostly just your fault for clicking videos off the top recommended front page instead of searching for what you want like a normal person would

These are basically all telltale signs that you're talking about some sort of lets play channel. You know, the kind of people who are using (or trying to use) their channel as their career and thus need things like company sponsorships and what not. Their videos are meant to be a replacement for TV series type of entertainment, not a replacement for guides. And I definitely agree with you that they don't make for very good ways to look up how to do something but that's not what they're for and you're the one who comes out looking dumb if you commplain about them for this reason

I still regularly look up how to do things in games and have basically never had any issues with anything in the first post.

I do agree with you though that the unskippable ads youtube sticks in videos really suck but fortunately adblock can just deal with them and really that's more a fault of internet advertising culture in general than youtube specifically

Not sure what sucks about it outside the ads. The mobile version is way more cumbersome and most videos now have background play with the app, which is very convenient.

If you see a person with a goofy expression in the thumbnail, avoid. Joey da Prince and ProZD are the only real exceptions.
If you see arrows and circles in the thumbnail, extra-super avoid.
If it starts with an animated vanity logo, go watch something else. AVGN is the only exception.

Basically, if it has "production values", it's just plain trying too hard.
