I remember seeing it in Hey Arnold and lots of other shows growing up. It's where I learned the "all the ice cream you can eat" cliche.

Yet not a single person I know has had their tonsils removed. It is nowhere near as common as TV made you think it was. It was practically a rite of passage.

Was it only white kids? I grew up with blacks and Latinos and they never even said the word tonsil.

I always felt kind of weird as a kid that I never had to have them removed. I kept thinking, "seems like it happens to everyone so it's gonna happen to me too sometime," but it never did.

It is a common procedure. It's kind of like wisdom teeth afaik, where many people have them removed, but others don't.

I believe it's becoming less common because of changes in diet and environment.
Chicken pox parties, similarly, are less common because the vaccine has become widely available in the last 30 years.

There are other medical trends caused by recent scientific advances. The number of people with food allergies has skyrocketed because babies are introduced to fewer germs. Obesity is skyrocketing because of changes to food sources. And so on...

Even as a kid and hearing the "endless ice cream" trope, I always assumed that it was bullshit. And even if it were true, I wouldn't want a bunch of ice cream. Maybe a scoop and I'm good.

When group of us would go to Dairy Queen, everyone would be getting sundaes and cones, but I'd be sitting there with a cheeseburger.
