Poll of the Day > Hellraiser (1987) is one of the most bizarre films I've ever seen.

It felt like it was based on a comic book or something. All of the characters were weird af. The whole rubix cube thing was an interesting and "wtf" concept. I enjoyed it, 8/10.
The daughter Kirsty was quite hot.

It is one of my favorite horror movies. The first sequel is ok. The rest weren't worth watching.

Clive Barker strikes me as a true original that can't seem to execute his ideas all that well. I've only seen Nightbreed and the first Hellraiser, but they're both feel like they're missing scenes that would have made them a bit more cohesive.

It's an interesting movie, and it's got several unique ideas in it, but no, it's not coherent. And the sequels, though I enjoy them on a camp level, don't really help.

What is not coherent about it?

Clive Barker has a wonderfully creative mind. I met him a couple years ago and he was really awesome towards everyone.

To be fair, Hellraiser was the first film he ever directed, and Nightbreed was the second. Filmmaking was never really his passion, and to some extent you have to wonder why they ever let him direct his own work at all (in comparison, how many films has Stephen King directed?).

You probably have a situation there where the films would have benefited from an outside eye who is more familiar with cinematography and editing rather than writing. On the other hand, any number of films have basically been ruined by a director who callously guts the meaning and nuance of the original work, so maybe they wouldn't have been better with an actual director.
