You're not really paying, you're allowing your quarter to be held hostage until you leave and thus recover it. Unless you're lazy and don't care about quarters, and thus don't bother returning the cart.

My local ShopRite used to do that back in the early 90s. And they'd even give people who signed up for a store discount card a little red token you could use instead of a quarter that had a neat little handle on it that made it easier to slot into and take out of the cart (I may still have one in a junk drawer somewhere). And it's like no inconvenience or trouble whatsoever as long as you remember to bring a quarter with you in the first place (and if you don't, because we increasingly live in an era of digital money, then it's really, really annoying).

Sure. I always return the cart anyways, and I've always liked this system.

I love people who don't put away carts. In fact on my way home from work, there's a Walmart that requires a $1 deposit and I always go checking for loonies. Once I made $5 in a single evening.

Over here you either have to use a 1 or a token similar to a 1 coin at Aldi, and a few other stores. Other bigger stores ditched the coin requirement which most of us want them to bring back due to lazy bastards taking the trolleys home with them, then ditching them on the streets afterward.

Some people just dont want any responsibility which leads into receiving no respect.
I had a back bumper dent from a stray shopping cart a few years ago. The parking lot had an incline that this old lady couldnt be bothered with, and she also drove out of the parking lot quick to avoid me. I usually will blame the older generation on being unable to secure a safe area for everyone else. So, I help by taking carts in for them.
Its also really pathetic to see a guy at any age leave a cart behind. Its like watching someone forget how to swim.

The lack of redneck trash is why I shop at aldi. Their produce is certainly questionable, but anything else is as good or better than Walmart. My final amount is always lower than expected at Aldi. I just wish there were less tattooed trash who can't afford food for their kids (but meth is a staple, right?) and others who can afford alcohol, tattoos, cigarettes, drugs, etc., but can't pay a penny to support any kind of education for their 15 kids.

Safeway where I used to live (Australia) did it like 20 years ago, and it was a $1

When they first rolled that idea out I'd walk around looking for abandoned carts to return.. even going as far as one suburb over to get one

You know, after saying I have no idea what Aldi is and completely assuming that they must be an out of State thing, Im suddenly seeing them everywhere! How does a chain move like 50 stores into the State and I dont even notice!?

Most stores make you put coins in the cart and it does not affect the prices at all. I usually take the basket anyway. Recently they even got these cool bigger baskets with wheels that are almost like carts, so I use that.

Return them to the store or to the cart corral outside? I want the carts outside as do many people with kids, the elderly and disabled.

Sucks if you don't have change.

Aldi has become huge in the US lately. They are privately held, carry a limited selection of products, mostly their own labels, only have 3 to 5 employees in the store at any one time, no cart collection, no free bags, and they leave stuff in the boxes rather than take time to stack the shelves. All combine to offer prices that even Walmart can't beat. And they pay some of the highest wages in the retail industry!

Lidl, another German grocer with a similar model is beginning to expand across the US as well.

Not at my Walmart :p

Same, and theres a billion carts left everywhere in the parking lot! Much rather have the deposit than half of the parking lot being eaten up by people who leave their cart there.

Although I certainly didn't like ALDI when they first arrived in SC, I've found them to have at least the quality of goods as Walmart, with even better prices. However, the three to five employees have the same intelligence of the combined staff at ANY Walmart that I've ever had the misfortune to visit. You may not find all you need in any given trip, but you can always find something, and most likely at a lower price than you expected. Plus, the people who frequent ALDI seem to be of a completely different caliber than the typical Walmart customer, in a good way. I go there at least once a week now.

The cashier at Aldi's once told me that if you ask for a quarter they will lend you one. She must have thought I was carrying too much groceries.

This, plus you get it back. Its there so people bring the cart back, instead of being lazy fucks

I thought it was so we could stop Bubbles from stealing all the carts and selling them back to the shopping mall.
