They originally pitched it as Daria & Jodie which had me nervous since I was sad for erasing Jane from the story but Im cool with a Jodie spinoff. I wonder if shes still dating Mac

They're just doing this out of desperation, they know hardcore Daria fans will watch it but they also picked to make a spin off about Jodie because she's black.

Of all the characters on the show, she honestly has the strongest personality to have an interesting spinoff.

Jane would have felt too similar to Daria...and Quinn would be missing a foil to herself

Trent & a Mystic Spiral spinoff I dont see as successful...like where are you gonna take the story?

It's underrated in that you don't often see people talk about it or mention it when talking about animated shows from the 90s.

I loved Daria but modern MTV making a show on this is just gonna be cringey and bad. Will still watch a few eps to see if it's good >_>

Is this live action or animation?

There actually was a pilot script for a Mystik Spiral spinoff about Trent and his band going to different towns to play gigs, but it never got further than a script >_>

Does she really? My memory is that her gimmick was basically just being a genuinely good, responsible person to contrast whatever dysfunctional bullshit the main characters were going through.

I mean, I guess it could be interesting to see that world from her perspective, but Im skeptical _>

jodie's character was that she had to be the perfect minority to gain respect and people would shove her to the foreground to prove how diverse like the time her and her boyfriend won a king and queen title they didnt even enter just so they could have 2 black students on the float

hell at the end of the series she decided to go to a primarily black college because the much better one her mom wanted her to go to would have her forced to continue to be the perfect example of a model minority to be respected and she wanted a chance to just relax and learn

There was also that great episode with Daria & Jodie trying to get a loan that dealt with possible racism and the ethics of using Jodies privilege to get around it

yes i remember that episode
the first bank manager immediately said he could give them a loan if daria's father co-signed and jodie wondered why he didnt ask her to get her father. he was only willing when he learned how jodie's father was since he was a major businessman in lawndale. jodie got made, called out the racism and walked out and daria smirked with pride :)

then at the next bank jodie immediately opened with her fathers name to get an approved loan and complete their assignment easily which made daria frown in judgement

jodie rightfully called daria on her attitude for the rest of the episode saying that maybe the first bank teller was racist but maybe she was just overreacting. daria is just upset that in her black and white view of the world jodie did something that fell into a grey area.

daria sees the error of her ways and apologized and it was a lesson that mostly stuck
thats what i liked about daria. she was the protagonist but it doesnt shy away from a simple fact, daria isnt unpopular because she is smart
she is unpopular because she is a bitch and the show makes sure we know it
the popular characters are actually super nice to her while she condescends to them constantly
she is usually right but when it comes to her treatment of her peers the show actually shows daria's attitude isnt right and has her grow out of it which i really liked about her character.
even she admits she actively works to make people dislike her cause its easier then trying and still have them dislike her

It was like the number 1 show in raw ratings that year. It didn't target the proper demographics for MTV though. Instead of teen girls they were getting grown ass men. Its not what their sponsors wanted so MTV didn't continue with it.

I noticed the link says it'll be the first of many Daria spin-offs... I wonder what that could possibly mean?

Daria was a different flavor of insanity from Beavis and Butthead. Jodie has a strong enough personality to carry a show of her own that makes its own path like Daria did. Maybe there's room for a Mystik Spiral monster-of-the-week type show, where instead of monsters it's just a different town with a whole other set of foibles and quirks, and it can be more of a slice-of-life show that focuses more on bandmate banter and road antics between gigs.

The Beavis and Butthead extended universe has shown considerable range in its treatment of Daria. I think there's room to create new shows that cover a diverse range of genres and tones.

Daria was cool as a kid, but after getting older, i realized she was one of the most 2 dimensional characters on the show. I hated tryhards like her in college, because they always thought their intellect gave them the justification behind their shit social skills.

Yeah makes perfect sense to me that id have a different take than two gay/bi guys as a straight white dude, not to be insensitive or anything

If its just about the assignment it doesnt mske sense to make a fuss at all though. Its more reductive than the show to frame the episode as showing jodie in the right and daria in the wrong imo

Fuck Tom! Daria x Trent OTP! fite me irl

i loved trent and understood daria's crush on him
he was hot and a bit of a bad boy but super nice. who wouldnt have a crush on a guy like that during thier teenage years?

yes tom was terrible. his mere existence hurt daria and janes friendship and i was so glad when daria finally dumped him. but toms introduction also marked the turning point in the series where it became less about the comedy and more about the character development and i actually liked the depth that brought to the characters. and daria's crush on trent disappearing was handled really well. the 2 could be decent friends but as a couple they would never work as trent is to much of a slacker

Would much rather get another Beavis and Butthead season. The brief comeback from years ago was great, although the fact that they added in Jersey Shore and Teen Mom clips into their couch riffing sessions kinda make them dated. But episode wise and all the segments where they riffed on music videos were all great, funny, and easily on par with the original series.
