You could say the game aged badly. Don't let nostalgia blind you. KoToR was the forefather of horrible, extreme and cartoonish morality choices.

I didn't think it was that great from the start. It was a fun and interesting game, but no break through game changer GOAT like many put it. I never could get into replaying it anyway even past Taris. I always got bored.

So in short, KoToR is overrated huh?

YOU GUYS GUESSED IT. KoToR is the next game I have on my list of One of the Most Overrated Games of All Time.

The choices were pretty cartoonish but it was an excellent game, and KOTORII I played the absolute shit out of.

It was pretty novel and interesting to decide whether to go down the light side or dark side. Having your choices change the outcome of the game but also your party's appearance and attitude towards each other was pretty incredible, and few games manage to do that to this day.

Not to mention it was the first RPG I ever remembered having actually interactively animated turn-based combat. Instead of just taking turns to hit each other, you and your enemy would dual and whether you hit or missed genuinely reflected in the animation. You character would parry a strike or dodge out the way, or totally obliterate the enemy depending on the usual RPG calculations. This is another feature that is still woefully missing from turn based games to this day. Hell I'm playing Divinity Original Sins 2 - an excellent game - and it's still doing that old thing where you watch your character make the same old clumsy attack while the other guy does nothing.

I know you're just desperate for attention, but the first kotor was honestly pretty mediocre in retrospect. I replayed it a year or two ago and was blown away by how childish the writing was. Like, every piece of dialogue you had in your trees made you sound like some sort of automaton that was programmed to either very nice or very mean with all the enthusiasm of a plank of wood. The engine they used was also, as far as I could tell, pretty much the NWN engine with a new interface and it felt worse than the aformentioned game.

KotOR 2 blows it out of the water in every respect, even being as half-finished as it is.

I never got too far into KOTOR for whatever reason but I do remember extremely early on walking in to some clinic of some kind where there were people in tubes (maybe they were being healed or cyrogenically frozen) and it was like I could just ignore it or I could shut the systems down and kill them all.

I mean, I felt like even a bad guy in the Star Wars universe wouldn't just kill a dozen strangers within the first five minutes of being on a planet. It felt like a very strange choice.

KotOR 2 blows it out of the water in every respect, even being as half-finished as it is.

I played KOTOR 1 and 2 simultaneously about a year ago (still not done with my Light Side character for KOTOR 2), and I remember thinking there was one problem that both games had that ran kinda parallel in opposite directions.

I recall feeling underpowered as hell in KOTOR 1, and way too overpowered in KOTOR 2. Like there was never a point where I felt like the games were balanced.

That said, I'm legitimately happy that KOTOR 2 finally got the recognition it deserves. I've always held it was the better game, even when I played both games for the first time around mid-00's. But almost nobody else shared my opinion. Now, most people rightfully point out The Sith Lords is the better title, even if, like you said, it was rushed and has unfinished content.
