Customer: I'd be asleep by 1am every night.
Me: Nah, you'd be fine. It just takes a few days to get your schedule changed over, but after that it's just like working any other shift.
Customer: What do you mean?
Me: Well, 1am for me is only 3 hours into my shift. You don't usually have much trouble with falling asleep 3 hours into your day shift, right?
Customer: Well no, but that's because I sleep.
Me: ....so do I?
Customer: When?
Me: During the day.
Customer: That's stupid.
Me: Ok...you have a good night.

Honestly, why is this such a difficult concept for people? I mean, it honestly sounded like this guy actually believed I didn't sleep. Ever. And this isn't a rare assumption, based on my conversations with customers. It just seems so fucked up to me that people think that's a logical conclusion to seeing me awake at night. Not "oh, he must just sleep at a different time than me" but instead "he must just not sleep." WTF?

The real issue is people don't understand what it does to you.
If you stick with it, it will fuck you up...at least in a societal sense.

The whole notion of, 'You get the whole day to your self' is shit.

I remember this from my third shift job days. One lady actually started lecturing me and I had to explain to her 7am was like my afternoon

It really is.

Three years of third shift was more than enough for me.

Hats off to anyone that does it.

I did it for longer. I'm about a half year out, and still not really back to 'normal'

I miss working night shifts as a security guard in the middle of nowhere. No one realizes how calming and easy that shift is. Most of the time I could actually take a nap myself because no one would check up on me.

I did that back when Jumbo/Blockbuster was still around, got through a good portion of their library using a portable dvd player, or my laptop. Pay 20 bucks for a good 10 dvds get paid 14/h for 8-12 hour shifts.

What I hated most working overnights at target was one of the employees who came in at 6am, and would get on the intercom, welcoming everybody and wishing them a great morning, all bright and cheery.

Bitch, we are tired now and ready to clock out and go to bed. You wouldn't want us doing the same to you at 10pm would you?

Yeah, this. Less chiefs running around and I get paid more.

I also miss all the morning and afternoon traffic. Takes me 15 minutes to get to and from work when it would take me 45 as a normie commuter. Fuck traffic. Its soul crushing and like work time you're not getting paid for.

But is not for everyone.

4 years on doing 12s over nights and still rarely have a good 8 hours of rest. Body is always waking up every few hours and if I have to get up to pee then it's game over lol. Body feels tired. Loss of energy. Skin looks pale. Eyes startto droop. It's a terrible shift, yet more relaxing. Just wish the job didn't go past 4am. It'd be nice to go to bed when the sun is still down.

I worked 3rd shift for like 12 years. It's not bad. You sleep while everyone else is at work. You still go out on weekends with friends. It's easy to not be some social misfit.

It has it's perks, but when you do night shifts because you go to school during the day you mainly start to miss sleep and rotate your schedule around when you can actually get rest

I hear you. I go to bed between 8am and noon usually. Blackout curtains are a must.

Fucking daywalkers. Sleeping during the night is stupid, you're missing prime time quiet time since there is nothing going on. While during the day you have people being loud and generally stupid.

Tbqh I miss out on a lot of social engagements because I effectively need notice ahead of time to make sure I'm up by when it's time, because otherwise I'll be sleeping during the day and my phone doesn't wake me up. I make it work, but it sucks sometimes.

But it's quite nice never having to deal with traffic, and having a lot of quiet time to myself at work. I smoke, and I love to just go outside for a smoke break and look up at the stars and shit.

Some people really struggle with night shifts. Im one of em. I left a job of almost three years after they brought in graveyards in my department.

Managed to stick it out through my second month of night shifts and I was so tired and miserable I just couldnt to it anymore.
