I recently asked my neighbors teen boy what he wanted to be when he grows up. He said he wanted to be President some day. Both of his parents, liberal democrats were standing there.

So I asked him, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"
He replied, Id give food and houses to all the homeless people.
His parents beamed with pride.

Wow what a worthy goal. I told him, But you don't have to wait until you are President to do that! You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.

He thought that over for a few seconds, then he looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50? "
I responded, welcome to Capitalism

His parents still aren't speaking to me.

I suppose we do have a lot of opportunities that people can't access (like the homeless person being unable to get to your yard).

So thing is:

1. Copypasta can be read as, "you seen the truth, welcome to capitalism, you are enlightened."
2. Boy thinks, "he should do the work" guy says that is capitalism
3. Boy dislikes homeless guy getting reward for no work, guy says, ye that is socialism. This is how toast was reading it.
4. In capitalism we still tax you and pay for stuff though, so it works either way

so do you straw man so much because you're trying to derail the conversation? are you trying to troll? or is it a fundamental lack of understanding?

what motivates you to straw man so frequently during your arguments? is it intentional on your part, either because you're trying to derail/shape the conversation, or just to troll / annoy others? or do you do it accidentally due to a fundamental lack of understanding about what the other person is saying?

if what i'm asking is unclear feel free to request clarification.

First of all, it wasn't a strawman.

USA does what the copypasta explains. This is through taxes and social programs.
USA does that but is capitalist. What is strawman there?

Then the rest of this if you harassing me because of a copypasta.

the original post that sparked this conversation definitely was.

Toast said "This isn't capitalism" and you responded with "USA isn't capitalist?". Toast was never attempting to claim the USA isn't capitalist at all -- you created a straw man and attacked it.

I just explained it in the last post.

The answer is USA is capitalist.
USA has social programs paid for via tax dollars.
So toast was wrong.
That is not a strawman.

Though also explained above, he might have been reading the copypasta in a different way.

i feel like you're being intentionally obtuse as this point.

why did you respond to Toast with a question that had nothing at all to do with his statement?

Toast claimed that your example was not capitalism. Your response was "You mean the USA isn't capitalist?".

Which is better to do:

1. Wrong it is capitalism
2. Ask a question to have a conversation that allows you to explain how it is capitalism

asking a question is good. but ask a question pertinent to the statement you're responding to.

Bad Approach --
Toast: "This isn't capitalism"
Phoenix: "Why are you saying the USA isn't capitalist?"

Good Approach --
Toast: "This isn't capitalism"
Phoenix: "Why do you think it isn't capitalism?"
