Resident evil was better as the horror series and it led into 5 and 6 Code veronica is one of the best reviewed games of the series and imo my personal favorite. Alan Wake exists. Resident Evil declined post-4 because Capcom chose to double down on the things that weren't good about RE4 rather than refining its best parts.
