Borderlands 2 is a massive improvement on the first in every conceivable way. I'm playing through 1 with a friend and I legit don't know what would lead a person to say it's a better game. The story is nonexistent, the world is bland as all get-out and the encounter design is largely thoughtless. Borderlands 2 fixes all of that and adds so much more it's kind of mindboggling.

To answer the question though you miss almost nothing by skipping 1 because 1 has almost nothing in it. You'll just miss a personal connection to the vault hunters from 1 you may have played as, but their actual characters don't really even exist until 2 so you're not missing much there either.

I used to think 1 was better than 2, but it turns out that was because I initially played 1 with a friend and 2 solo which clouded my experience. After playing the DLC of both games as well as replaying 1 with the remastered edition I can safely say that 2 is much better.

lol it's the opposite for me

I played BL1 solo and BL2 with friends and I enjoyed playing solo much more. Can't play at the pace I want to play when playing with others.

4-player Borderlands 1 was pretty fun

we went at a breakneck speed most of the time so the pacing was ok
