This describes what happened with Majora's Mask several years ago.

When a certain generation gets older, the games, even if less than stellar at the time, get a really strong fanbase. Expect to see the same thing with Skyward Sword in 8-10 years when its generation gets a bit older.

I think the first three dungeons and everything before that in Twilight Princess constitute the worst starting section of any Zelda game since before Link to the Past and then everything after is brilliant. I wouldn't be opposed to anything remaining winning if MM goes today, although I'm still yet to play BotW properly so I can't say much on that.

Majora and Twilight, while still liked, weren't loved at quite the same caliber as a typical Zelda game. It took a bit more nostalgia for people to overlook their flaws.

Twilight arrived with insane hype, for good reason too. It was a rare occurrence of a Zelda game being a launch title for a new system, and it was the long awaited return to realistic 3D graphics in the series. The game obviously did well, and was well liked. However, some people felt it was lacking (not me), and some of its notoriety diminished sooner than other Zelda games, just in part due to the reasons it was so popular not being as relevant as time passed. But it has been making a gradual comeback in terms of it's worth among Zelda fans, partly due to nostalgia among people at the time. I'm personally glad, because I always thought it was one of the better ones.

It did really well in GOTD, too. 48% on Brawl was nothing to sneeze at back then.

But yeah, Skyward Sword suffers from coming out too late in the Wii's lifespan and being on the least beloved Nintendo console ever. I think being released on Switch would be a huge boon to it, honestly.

Eh I think you're confusing the vocal minorities with the overall fanbase perception. Twilight Princess has been in three game contests and it's done very well in each of them. I think it was at its peak in 2008 when it had the hype train, but it's always been a popular Zelda game.

Of course, 2006 was a pretty weak field, all things considered, since the biggest competition was FFXII, Gears of War, and Oblivion before Elder Scrolls became popular.
