My eight year contract is up. Someone else can go fight the huge clusterfuck should we invade Iran. Unlike the Iraqis, the Iranians actually know how to fight and are pretty nationalistic to boot.

just the opening line alone
Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan presented a military plan at a meeting of top national security officials last week that would send as many as 120,000 US troops to the Middle East in the event that Iran strikes American forces in the region or speeds up its development of nuclear weapons

So I'm guessing no one actually bothered to read the article.

A plan was presented as a possible response to an attack on us troops by iran. That's it.

Nah, the U.S. would blow Iran out of the water, although they'll put up a stiffer fight than Iraq. The occupation afterwards might be a quagmire though.

*Might*? Iran has several times the population of Iraq, with lots of rugged mountainous terrain(in which most of the major cities are located!), and the odd jungle. There are no serious ethnic divisions, religious differences or political factions that would ease the process. Persia historically assimilates conquerors or becomes their graveyard. It would make Iraq and Afghanistan look like Grenada.

I don't disagree with that, but at the same time Iran does not have a plethora of experience in waging unconventional warfare like the Taliban or Al-Qaeda did. Further, Iran is more developed infrastructurally which would make the occupation an easier task logistically, and Iranians would probably be more accepting of the type of secular democratic government the U.S. would probably try to implement compared to Afghanistan or Iraq.

At the end of the day it is unknown how it would play out, and I hope it stays that way.

You are assuming that the occupation wouldn't attract foreign fighters in the same way that Iraq and Afghanistan did. Let's also not forget that Russia would basically jerk off to the chance to fund and equip fighters bogging down American forces in another Vietnam.

Aside from the fact that this is a hypothetical scenario, Trump is the one calling the shots and as long as he's in office we won't start anymore pointless and expensive wars. I would be more worried about Republican and even some Democrat 2020 challengers running on pro-war propaganda and calling Trump weak for wanting stay out of Iran.

Lol the Iranians are responsible for establishing Hezbollah, one of the most successful terrorist/ guerrilla groups out there. They've also trained and funded several insurgent groups in iraq responsible for thousands of US dead and injured. They are plenty experienced in unconventional warfare.

Any Iranian secular regime backed by the US will be seen as a western puppet and illegitimate by most Iranians, you think we would've learned our lesson when the CIA overthrew Mosaddegh back in the 50s. Any occupation of Iran is going to be a clusterfuck that would make Iraq look like a walk in the park.
