It's a good film.

It has an all-time great opening montage, and though the rest of the movie's not on that level, it's still pretty good. It might be very slightly overrated but not by much.

Fun fact: Akira is the only movie to have an 0-7 all-time record in these contests. Everything else has either won a match at some point or hasn't made the contest every time. Which just makes it more puzzling that Akira is so weak; you'd think if had enough support to keep making the field it would eventually luck its way into a match against some uber-fodder.
