It's different in RDR1 where John is forced into the situation, here everyone is just a terrible person.

How is it treated like a tragedy?

Most don't even register it because of Jack.

Arthur is sad, sure. But he likes the guy. If you can't understand someone being sad his friend died I really don't know what to tell you.

I tried to do the same, but some missions make it very hard to feel honorable.

Like a lot of the home robbery missions or debt collecting missions make Arthur a straight up dick. Like the one with the woman and her son. It was the husband who owed the debt, but he died of illness so the debt fell to her and when Arthur shakes them down, the son gives him the stinkeye (understandable) and Arthur tells him (paraphrased) "you best show respect boah or your mama will be mourning a second family member" Like slow down, man.

tl;dr: if you try to play the game as an honorable outlaw, you're gonna have a bad time

I kind of figured it'd be weird playing a good guy in this one. That line is what you'd expect to hear from villains in western movies/shows

Yeah I did that recently and it's pretty weird to have Arthur going from tipping his hat at passerby to being a huge dick to a widow and her son

Honestly I loved the way that whole arc played out. At the beginning of the game Arthur is a dick. He does those missions because he doesn't care about those people, he just cares about the money. He gets tuberculosis because of the specific one you mentioned and it makes him question his whole life. It's one of the reasons he changes and seeks redemption. I don't know if you've finished that whole quest line yet, but he does try to make it up to the wife and son and it's a really well done bit of story.

I also thought it was interesting that it turned out the Pinkertons picked up Strauss and he didn't say a word. He died in custody, never gave anyone up even after what Arthur did to him.

Yes, although it's foreshadowed in a story mission when he runs into her in Annesberg.

You also need at least neutral honor I think

Yeah I ran into her so I figured it would come up in a future story mission. My honor bar was always at about 3/4 from chapter 4 onward

Touching on that mission you mentioned, the quote is along the lines of Once your mother is finished mourning your father, Ill keep her in black on your behalf.

Another memorable quote (paraphrased) after Arthur saves someone that saw him in Blackwater is But I aint a good man. I was in Blackwater. I killed people. Maybe I should have killed you. Should I have killed you?

Theres really no being a good guy in rdr2 until the last handful of missions.

It's crazy how many times you can ride through the same areas you've been to a million times before and still run into new strangers you haven't met yet. It's the reason I haven't used fast travel at all. I've clocked like 270 hours and am in the post-game, still finding new stuff to do

A lot of the people killed by Dutch's gang (outside of a few exceptions) were either corrupt or just plain evil.

Me too. Sadie ended up being an awesome character. I loved that she started out as a damsel in distress, stayed quietly in the background for most of the story, then emerged as a total badass by the end. She was amazing in the epilogue

You're not supposed to sympathise with the gang. At best you're supposed to maybe sympathise with Arthur and John because they were manipulated by Dutch but even then it's more like you are sad because they could have been decent but chose not too.

Yeah, I remember that one. He says that after you spare him. I actually think that quote was badass. Unlike the widow's son one which was just mean lol

What about that Sean side activity stagecoach robbery? He's supposed to shoot the coach or ground to scare them. Instead he snipes the driver.
