When people are too fucking scared to stand up and say no. This is what happens.

Upper management who gets all the time off they want doesnt think about the person who has a family they want to be with.

It's the same in every industry.

"Blah blah blah my incompetence fucked up the schedule, just come in Saturday and Sunday and stay late to get it done"

But I DONT want to come in Saturday and Sunday, even if it's for 1.5 time. I'd prefer to be with my family. And arent you HOME on weekends?

"Yes but I'M answering emails!"

Basically this. It's hard to have any pull or rights if youre not in a union.

Some jobs are better than others. Some companies are better than others.

As someone who works in corporate America, I do put in the hours and take on some responsibilities that aren't necessarily required of me. I also get bonuses every year, generous pay raises, and I'm not micro-managed. My boss knows that his requirements of me will be fulfilled. My "work ethic", or whatever you'd like to call it, has allowed me to grow professionally and I'm overall quite satisfied.

Alternatively, I could do the bare minimum and become stagnant. I would likely still have my job, but without the perks I currently have.

If you're going to be making money that pays for mortgages, car notes, children's college funds, leisure and vacations, you're probably going to have to offer value to the company who is paying for that.

Basically it's been about the bottom line for decades now.

Share holders and execs couldnt honestly give two shits about john jones in entry level accounting working 16 hour days and having to worry about taking a sick day or losing their job.

Cause there are thousands of people who will do his job for less with no issues.

There is zero loyalty. It's all greed. Zero appreciation.

It's actually sickening when you think about it.

A multi millionaire will crack the whip from his comfy mansion and be home with family or on lavish trips during holidays while the bottom workers are expected to sacrifice time for them.

Coming in every day you're expected to, doing your work and doing it well and within your obligations is loyalty to the employer.

You're getting paid to do a specific job. If you're doing that, you're upholding your end.

Employers and companies who are at will employment and employ salaried employees take advantage of them. That's pretty obvious though so I shouldnt need to explain that.

I get plenty of PTO, recognition, reward for doing only my job and I get paid rather well for it.

There are poopy employers out there, sure, but there are some great ones out there too. Id assume this is the standard in any country, but Im sure someone will be quick to prove to me how wrong that assumption is, which is fine.

My company has been trying to turn into a corporate cult like they have seen be successful at other companies. There are ways you are supposed to think and believes you are supposed to have, our leadership is trying to make a cult of personality out of our CEO, we are asked to work overtime without any actual work needing to be done, lots of talk how we are all a family, many things can't really be questioned anymore, people get promoted for buying into the system rather than being good at their job. I started noticing the change about 2013, really started getting bad in 2015.

Well.

In America, where amazon makes billions upon billions a year in revenue and you hear how they treat their warehouse workers and such. Its disheartening. Where companies are capable of paying better wages and offering more compensation they just dont because people are always looking for work and people are replaceable in an instant.

Lol

I guess it's okay to only value yourself based on what you provide to a CEO and board of directors

As someone who works in an Amazon FC I feel like we get treated pretty well for the most part. Sure we could be making more but a lot of the non-pay complaints mentioned ITT I've never had to deal with.

I mean, there are quite a few companies like that. When I worked at Walmart, it was butt. Great Wolf Lodge treated me great, I loved my time in DoD. Implementing the ACA in MD was.. interesting..and as an underwriter Im doing quite well. Sales was shit, though. There I had to do the work of like six people to get a tiny bump in my commission. It was a revolving door, too (and Im in Baltimore now)

Some places are just butt. Thats no excuse or consolidation towards those in that position, but I dunno what to say/do about it. It does break my heart sometimes seeing great people struggling, and I do what I can to help those that I can, but I dunno, man. I just feel like shit sucks sometimes, but we gotta do what we can to get in a better spot, ya know?

I'm not so sure about that article.

We may not have any mandatory vacation days paid to all full time workers, but for all we know, those 10 days they get in Japan may be many people's only ones. After all, it's sort of well known that quite a few Japanese workers commit literal suicide by jumping out of their office buildings.
