Also, I know it's the winter sale and it's not featured -- is there a reason to hold off in case it goes even lower? I haven't done a Steam Sale in years, so I forget.

Sale prices are final these days, they did away with featured / flash sales and what not when they rolled out refunds.

I think it's a great game, but it's not for me. I think if you like games like Dark Souls, it's an easy pick up and well worth the sales price. Myself, I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I enjoyed it well enough

I would give it a thumbs up

Nah, couldn't beat the first boss on the boat and I remember there being some confusing shit about the combat.

Hard pass

It's kind of like if you mixed Diablo with Dark Souls and gave it a fictionalized historic Japanese theme.

It was okay, but not great. It lacks the charm of Dark Souls or Diablo

Hmm. Okay. I love both those franchises, two of my favorites ever. I know what you mean about how sometimes the magic just isnt there though.

i liked it a lot but the loot (rng) aspect was my least favorite part.

the combat is great and the way you change stances to keep your stamina full makes it real interesting.

i really disliked Nioh. it feels like a bunch of devs got together in a board room, made a list of as many dark souls qualities as they could think of (currency you lose upon death, bonfires, shortcuts, challenge, etc) and crammed them all into an action game, without any thought as to what most people really like about the dark souls franchise.

as i played nioh more and more, i realized that what i love about dark souls is not necessarily the bonfires and soul system and all that, it's the level design, bosses, enemy variety, atmosphere, etc. nioh kind of falls apart in all those categories imo

It's only like Soulsborne when it comes to the surface shit that you mentioned. Bonfires, souls to level up, unlocking shortcuts that takes you back to bonfires... It's really nothing like it, in many ways.

I'd compare the game more to Onimusha or Ninja Gaiden. It's got some pretty heavy loot aspects, as well. Which are practically vacant in Dark souls.

my point is that nioh crams in all these soulsborne mechanics and none of them really work well. i would have much preferred if nioh was more of a straight up action game like ninja gaiden or something

No, Nioh is fine as it is. I look forward to them making the next game better.
