i really disliked Nioh. it feels like a bunch of devs got together in a board room, made a list of as many dark souls qualities as they could think of (currency you lose upon death, bonfires, shortcuts, challenge, etc) and crammed them all into an action game, without any thought as to what most people really like about the dark souls franchise.

as i played nioh more and more, i realized that what i love about dark souls is not necessarily the bonfires and soul system and all that, it's the level design, bosses, enemy variety, atmosphere, etc. nioh kind of falls apart in all those categories imo

It's only like Soulsborne when it comes to the surface shit that you mentioned. Bonfires, souls to level up, unlocking shortcuts that takes you back to bonfires... It's really nothing like it, in many ways.

I'd compare the game more to Onimusha or Ninja Gaiden. It's got some pretty heavy loot aspects, as well. Which are practically vacant in Dark souls.

my point is that nioh crams in all these soulsborne mechanics and none of them really work well. i would have much preferred if nioh was more of a straight up action game like ninja gaiden or something

No, Nioh is fine as it is. I look forward to them making the next game better.
