So it stops being magic as soon as there is any functional explanation?

Depends on the story, many science fiction stories define magic as something that cannot be understood or explained, so if it's understood, it's no longer magic.

Than there are science fiction stories (many science fiction JRPGS) where magic is just something that exists alongside science and technology.

No, it stops being game magic when it's not fire and lightning and stuff

When I play a Wizard in D&D I almost never take fire or lightning spells. I'm pretty sure it's still magic.

Psionics is just ME language for magic. It's blatantly obvious those powers are based on spellcasting.

I don't remember which game had what powers but they literally have stuff like "Cryo" for ice "spells", Pyro for fire, Shockwave for electricity etc... Very much spellcasting, just with a fancy label and some science-y BS to try to set it apart

I don't disagree, but that's an entirely different argument than the one you started with and I was disputing.

The real problem is that too many stories treat magic like science while others treat science like magic, so there's a really murky middle ground between the two that can make it hard to separate the two.

Was away playing Settlers of Catan:

Basically, can you exploit elemental weaknesses? Get resistances, and regular RPG stuff? But then again, I think Mass Effect did do that sligthly

But ya, I do mean more like Phantasy Star... even though it's literally not magic in universe, it's fire/ice/lightning/cure

I think Spelljammer had some stuff, but it's been ages

Online doesn't count. They haven't had a real Phantasy Star game since IV.

That was never really a core premise of "magic" until D&D did it, and then JRPGs stole all their ideas from D&D and helped perpetuate it in video game circles.

I wonder if a space themed version would have been popular.
