Slowly getting through the opening act of the game, it really does not hold on to the player's hand does it?

1 death and 1 near death in the first five minutes, fell of that tower when climbing down and had one of those magnet cubes drop on my head leaving me at a quarter heart.

Then the game tells you to find three shrines and mark them, only after ten minutes of trying to find my way towards my yellow mark, I see it is way of map and unreachable right now.

Eventually I do get close to one of my other 2 marks and suddenly the climate starts killing me... Atleast I found the shrine and got another skill and orb, so I suppose I am on the right way.

Now if only the weapons lasted more than half a combat, the combat is fun, but having to pick up every other enemy dropped weapon because mine broke again is getting kinda obnoxious...

Never played a Zelda game with such a steep learning curve before, but it is still fun.

Cooking will save your life in the cold.

You don't need to fight every baddie. Use stealth and bomb attacks. Kiting is a skill to utilize. Throw a weapon that's about to break.

This topic makes me want to play through BotW again. Phenomenal game.

It was very unexpected just how challenging the game was. Early game is probably the hardest part, but even later in the game you'll be shocked when you're OHKO'd with 16 hearts or something by a strong enemy.

My advice? Look up nothing. Just explore and discover stuff on your own.

Bombs do a lot to offset the weapon breakage problems of the early game, especially where bombs are stronger than a lot of early-game weapons anyway. As you find more durable weapons with higher damage later in the game, bombs fall off quite a bit, but it's still just plain fun to roll one down a hill into a camp and blow everyone up.

True. Though, you can get Cold gear early in the game. If you cook a certain dish for a someone early on, he gives you gear good enough to make it to the shrine in the early cold part. Though, you still have to get the other stuff later on...

I was never good in stealth and bomb combat in games like these, so obviously I am not focussing on that. 3d Zeldas have fun combat, so I tend to play them like hack'n'slash games with some puzzles.

The game really starts once you leave the plateau, heres some simple advice if you want it: use paths as a guide if you aren't exploring and don't bother with parrying until you get better with dodging since if you fail dodging you can at least block hits if you have a shield a good deal of the time.

My suggestion is to buy the dlc if you havent and immediately start over with Master Mode before you get too invested in your current save. The game becomes exponentially harder and makes you dive into the stealth and cooking aspects right from the getgo if you want even a chance to survive. Its not for the feint of heart though!

Unfortunately you have to start over and cant simply upgrade your current save to the harder difficulty.

Master Mode was disappointing to me. The plateau at the beginning was tough. The rest of the game wasn't much different from the regular mode. I expected more.

I had to get through 2 Devine Beasts before I felt really comfortable with just roaming off the beaten path and I still dont fight most groups of enemies larger than 2. And when I do I tend to just try to fling them off onto a lower level or into a lake or lava or whatever instead of actually killing them. And dont even get me started on Guardians, as I still cant time the parry well and its no longer a one hit kill!!!

I do have the DLC, but I am not really that much of a glutton for punishment. It is more something I would try as a second playthrough, sometime down the line. I am also abysmal at stealth and really do not enjoy it for prolonged amounts of time in a real-time game, so a mode that depends even heavier on it is not for me.

As an anecdote, I was stuck on Forsaken Fortress for a full year on my first playthrough of Windwaker all those years ago. Zelda combat is fun, Zelda stealth not so much, but fortunately always limited.

Mainly played 2d Zeldas recently, where they are immortal. 3d, you throw bombs if I remember right? Bombs was my fourth shrine and I found it just before that shrine, so have not tried that yet.

Also, so far I have not had a need to look things up yet, even if they could have made the shrine finding a bit more player friendly, it still works.

Yes. If you get all the shrines and divine beast, you can Max our stamina, and be short 3 hearts of the max. Which you can easily get by eating a food that gives extra hearts. And you can still eat food to give you more stamina. And thats why its better to max our stamina and then hearts after once you have all the shrines. Whore you have all the shrines, so whatever, though. Haha.
