Holy shit worst realization of the real world in my life.

Wow I worked like a slave this year and managed to make some decent money for the first time in my life.
Then you lose like 1/3rd of it on taxes.

damn yo I still remember the feeling of living in a cruel world like my money was just stolen and all my hard work was insignificant.

My first paycheck was like 200 bucks because in boot camp they charge you for all your uniforms and stuff xd.

And my first year doing taxes the IRS didn't accept my return because my personal information and social security number didn't match, which I thought was funny because I was already in the military for like a year. Leave it to the IRS to catch stuff like that.

Pretty much the same here, but my taxes are short a couple thousand. Of course, here in MD, there's also a county tax levied in addition to the state tax based on your zip code.

But unfortunately, this isn't a fair world.

That was pretty much how I felt when I got my first paycheck at 15.

"What the fuck is Medicare even doing that they need this much of my money? Why can't I use Medicare if I'm fucking paying for it?"

In that order.

I've never understood this idea. Maybe when you're working entry level retail or something as a teenager, I could understand counting up how many hours it would take for you to buy *insert thing*, but when you get a real, adult job aren't you familiar enough with the idea of taxes that it doesn't come as a surprise to you?

Part of it goes to your retirement money. To be able to live in a civilization.

I get taken off around 22-23% of my paycheck and while its not something I like, I feel better knowing that my family has a good health insurance. That it goes towards my child's and other kids education.

The problem I do have is how wasteful the government can be. How they can have outrageous salaries and have blank checks for military contractors. Also how medicine is so expensive and thus the reason why medicare/aid is such a huge chunk of the budget.

I was pretty happy with my 40k salary right out of college (I know 40k isn't great, but for my field, it's good for a 1st year). But only getting $1100 bi-weekly was a bit of a bummer for how much I'm paying in student loans per month.

which is better

It's more work (and you have to be disciplined and realize you're going to have an enormous tax bill every spring) but if you don't have any taxes taken directly from your paycheck you can instead put that money into treasury bills or even a high interest savings account and earn a fair amount of interest on it. By having it taken directly from your paycheck you are effectively giving the government an interest free loan.

No...

The taxes you "pay" from each paycheck is an approximate amount based on information you provide to your employer, but it's not an actual reflection of how much you have to pay or are owed when you actually have to file your tax return.
